We have just travelled from Victoria through SA across the Nullabor to Esperance towing our JB Caravans Scorpion and have been checking Litres/100km travelled.
We have been averaging 20 l/100km in the LandCruiser 200 series until we filled up twice on the Nullabor, suddenly we were getting 25 l/100km we think the pumps may have been overstating the litres as our speed had not changed and the there was little or no wind.
Anyone found the same problem?

We've had similar suspicions. I am usually careful to fill right to the top and have had unexplained difference, but not as much as that.
Their pumps are probably checked 5 yearly or something as ridiculous so get away with it.

Did you have a headwind? I find my consumption goes up hugely. When crossing the Hay Plains last year into a headwind it was like driving uphill and I was down to 3rd gear at times? Andy

My cousin would always tell me it is uphill all the way to WA across the Nullarbor and it does seem to be too.

Feels like you are going uphill but on the earlier part of the trip we had plenty of hills and still manages 20

you may find , it is th blending of th fuel .
I am at Grafton NSW , we get Qld fuel .
some yrs ago they took most of th sulphur out of diesel ,so to make it cleaner .
I get better mileage when I fill up coming home from th south .
check it out , if it seems clearer or bluer , when you fill up . I notice the
difference of th colour when I get drums of fuel for my tractor .
I allways check , th 10litre mark - 1:40per litre X 10 =14$
gives me a good indication if th bowser is calibrated right .

I find it hard to regularly keep an eye on the fuel consumption , especially when camping
. My mind is so much onother things
where I'm going
How to get there
If I have packed everything ,
How long can I stay at the camp site ,
how much tyre pressure is in all the tyres,
Did I remember to turn the gas off,
What fish or redclaw might be at the campsite ,
where will I get bait from .
Is my athritus going to be a problem when I get to the camp
Fuel comsumption is well down the list . . . . . ha ha ha
I do think my RAV 4 might suck up more fuel than I want to know about .

Often thought about this. I think the plan would be to check at 10 litres, just to be sure.
But I definitely agree with my van about what to think about! I could probably add more to the list like" how is the boss going to tell me how to back in this time" or " is my beer cold".

A certain 'Service Station' in country S.A. once supposedly filled up my Land Rover Discovery with more fuel than my tank could even hold...I was nearly empty but it supposedly overfilled my tank by about 8 to 10 litres...the amount it took to fill it was less than my tank capacity.. go figure...no I did not report it, as owner wasnt there, it was self-serve, and lady on till would have had no idea I'm certain of the games the owner was playing....never went back and I rarely saw anyone filling when passing regularly...no doubt his dishonesty cost him more than he pinched...... As an aside my Diesel Mechanic who has been servicing vehicles for many years including mine asked me what I had put in my tank when I went to pick it up after service..I told him I had just changed to the Woolworths Servo using a discount voucher for my diesel purchase.....his reply..."it does not look like diesel, does not smell like diesel and dont know what it is but it certainly is not like any diesel I've seen."......he said stick to Shell and dont change fuels unless you have to....followed his advice and never had any problems...Hoo Roo

we are in south australia at moment having traveled from qld and fuel was differant each time we filled up
1 speed we where doing
2 wear and tear on the roads and roadworks
3 and head winds
we have been told that as you go over to WA you can get very strong head winds and that you are driving uphill so to speak
so either way its a lose lose situation
we go onto willyweather.com .au and check the wind direction before we move and we have been told that if you find it windy stay put

I found Perth north my consumption was higher than the rest of the trip round QLD, down south etc. Am going back to perth so will see if the reverse direction makes a difference. I did have a lot of head winds on the first trip so should be flying along with a tail wind i hope!

Just heard on news where they recon fuel in QLD is going to go up 10c/15c per Lt... from next week ,due to the Oz $.Do not know if this price hike is Australia wide. or just here in QLD.

Besides this fuel increase in Qld they just announced insurance increases /water increases /power increases/ ....car insurance increase .Adds up to about $600 extra per year. Makes other states look good to relocate to.

No wonder big business is heading over seas , they just cannot sustain the taxes and all the other stuff that the average person in the street never hears about. If mining closes shop hear ,this country will go under. no problems there I can tell you .No new mines are even looking at opening any new mines up here, most are just hear until leases run out and then they will be gone.

We crossed the Nullabour in 2009 and used much more fule than normal and we definitely had a tail wind going over but on the way back a bit of a head wind but we had been told in Norseman which servos to refuel at, I have dual fuel and around 700 k range and even with the light head wind we used less fuel cumming back.
Had to replace tug battery in Ceduna which cost $220 fitted at the local truck workshop, This battery died on the way back from port Macquarie last week new replacement battery with slightly higher cranking power $211.00 Thanks NRMA

I've never thought to check the bowser at the 10lt fill point. A good way to check it's accuracy. Thanks for that tip. I always work out our fuel consumption for our travels so I'll add that one to the duties.

As a regular "commuter" of the Nullarbor we know not to fuel up at Nullarbor Roadhouse. We fill at Ceduna or Norseman, and top up at Mundrabilla.lll If I have to top up at Border Village I only put in enough to get me back to Ceduna. Eucla Caltex is about 5c/litre cheaper than BP Border Village. Most of the roadhouses out that way are owned by the same bloke. You don't stand a chance. Safe and happy travels.

By all means check the gauge at the 10 litre mark, and calculate the price etc.
BUT, unless you are putting the fuel into a measuring device, maybe a 10 litre jerry can, how will you know that you have actually received 10 litres of petrol???

Just announced today a new large mine at Springshure opening up just as soon as
the paperwork is done.
I am sure there will be more mines to folow
The only problem with this mining money is the two speed eccomony developing

I moved to Qld once, couldn't wait to get back to NSW.
