All I can tell you is our experience of going to Kangaroo Island in the colder months. Would not go there again during winter .Justto cold/ wet/ windy. It is an area where to get some kind of value for money you need to have warmer weather. Do not know how much it is now,but it was not cheap when we went, but still cheaper than in the warmer months... I would looking at conpearing prices between going there and going to Tassie this time of year,as they have some cheaper fares,September $54 per person each way and for vehicle an extra $89. Why I mention Tassie is it is not any colder over there than Kanga Island, and a hell of a lot more to do and see.We would not go back over to Kanga Island ,we found it to be very boring after the first couple of days. This is my opinion only. I am sure others will have rave reviews regarding it.

The short answer is no. I was there for two weeks a few years ago in March, a time of the year when the weather is normally nice but it was cold and windy and not all that pleasant then.
Someone with local knowledge may give you a better idea of the best time to go.
PS: After reading herbie's post I feel a bit inclined to concur.

We loved Kangaroo Island but we did go in January. But as I remember it was still so cold we had to buy a heap of warm clothes for the family from an op shop before we went - and that was January!! Lots to see if you're prepared for the cold.

KI is a great place in the warmer months but cold wet and windy in winter. Would not please everyone, some great scenery and some great camping in places like Flinders Chase if your into native animals. Great fishing on Sth side but dam windy.

Your got to be Joking $366 each way, build a bridge for Christ sake it would be a money spinner. I couldn't believe my eyes when I got onto the Sea=link site The entire trip from their timetable is about 1 1/4 hours each way . I'll bet they also get a govt subsidize as part of the Highways system.

we've been to KI in winter yep it's cold and wet but we just rugged up and put wet weather gear on and it was great,,I loved the flinders chase NP and to see the waves crashing on the rocks amazing and the go to remarkable rocks and stand there leaning froward against the wind something else,,,it certainly takes your breath away there is always some where to find shelter out of the wind , but then i guess it just depends on what you like ,,, I think if you waited for the perfect weather to go somewhere you'd never go anywhere much

Well that's blown that . So what your saying is the Mini and gypsy two wheel trailer, this is getting worse . So much for tourist campaigns Holiday at Home Maybe stop with the tourism campaigns for a year or so and build a four lane bridge then the tourist will come in their droves

Its certainly not cheap to get over there and while there's some beautiful places and great experiences I reckon you can get similar elsewhere. We were over there in summer and it was cold and windy, god knows what it would be like now. What's more, move out of the three population centers (Kingscote, Penneshaw and Pandana) and you have nothing - no pubs, overpriced and poorly stocked roadside shops/petrol sales. Save your money and go to McLaren Vale and get some plonk far more enjoyable :)

Cold, wet, miserable, and expensive.

Well this thread proves that everywhere is judged by our own personal opinion. We enjoyed Kangaroo Is (even though it was cold in January) but our opinion is flavoured by our own personal experience. So it's really hard to ask 'Is it worth going?' when the replies will always be subject to our own personal opinions. A hard one. Hope the original poster was able to make up their mind.
