Heading off to do some fishing up the Cape in the morning with a mate and my son from Longreach....the wife and daughter in law flew out to Sydney this morning from Longreach to meet up with daughter who lives in Perth to head to the snow for two weeks and we the boys are off to do some bonding ... While in Longreach waiting for son to start his holidays I have been doing some beaut small trips around this area. Went and had a look at the old cemetery early this morning ,what an interesting place to have a look at. Also did the Starlight Look out today ,well worth a look ,he sure knew what place to pick for his hide out. Also went and had a squiz at Stockman Hall of Fame and Qantas museum .On the way up from Gladstone a lot of vans/motor homes heading north. Made a few detours on the way up,Went out to Rubyvale and sapphire and Willows gem fields.Had lunch at the newish pub at Rubyvale. Stayed over in RSL Veterans Retreat at Sapphire, beaut place, meals Thursday/ Friday and sat nights. Brought some bread at Snows bakery in Alpha the next day and a pie ,one of the best pies in this neck of the country.I had a few days to fill in so did a lot of looking around instead of gong from point A to B in one stint.....Well it is Thursday morning and have not travelled far just got to Winton ,having a look around this beaut little out back town.Went and had a look at the free camp ,well gold coin donation behind the North Gregory Pub,was talking to the lady who puts a show on inside the pub every arvo at 4.30 about Waltzing Matilda,she told me she comes here this time of year to stay from Murray Bridge SA.The camp area out the back is not all that lge ,and it is full as I wite this but you can only stay three nights ,so always people leaving.There is also a refurbished laundry showers and toilets.Behind the pub an interesting fence has been erected by one of the old locals Arno's wall has become some what of a tourist attraction it reaches two metres high and extending about 70 metres in length, this wall is constructed of concrete rock and studded with rustic memorabilia including old motor bikes, and even the kitchen sink.....went out and had a bash on the drum kit at the Singing Fence, just behind the Truck museum .These people out this way make their own entertainment with what they have at hand at the time. Well worth a look at is the Royal Open Air Theatre Museum and Opal Walk . a glimpse of an Opal mine leading out to the open air theatre , old movie equipment, slides, posters and the worlds largest deck chair.The Corfield and Fitzmaurice building near the pub is worth a look inside also.We are heading over the road for lunch at the pub on the corner ,they recon it has the best fresh bug platter in the whole of QLD,so will keep you posted on that one. Slim Dusty might be well known here in OZ, but the song Waltzing Matilda is the only song in the world who has museum dedicated to it. This is going to be a slow enjoyable trip to the Cape as we have six weeks to fill in, and sons Troopy and off road camper will get a good shake down from it all.And best of all I am not pulling the van we are all in his set up,so we better not get unfriendly towards each other or it is going to be a hitch a ride back home.Hope I have not ranted here but thought some of you may be interested in what Winton has to offer .We are camping out at Con Hole , good fishing and camping spot about 55ks from Winton.

Well you and the wife will experience the two extremes of Australian weather. What an amazing country we live in.
