I have to talk about flip flops on my blog because it confuses Americans. Thongs over there are ultra brief underwear - so you can imagine what they think when you say Aussies go camping in thongs.
Or even worse... when you say campers leave them outside their vans to be stolen by dingos.

After reading Solo Steve's blog regarding one stolen thong, thought I would just let anyone know who is new to camping in Dingo territory that they just love foot wear of any type,I think it is the perspiration odour that attracts them to foot wear. Steve has an SOS out regarding the thong picture also included if you happen to come across it please return it as soon as possible to him .As it is not just any old rubber thong.

Thanks Herbie for confirming my suspicion, no need for the inquest now. Not sure how to take the foot odour
theory though. By the way, I have increased the reward for return of my Thong (aka Flip Flop/Jandal) my
right foot is killing me.

Garry, just re your post American's interpretation of a thong is so true. While we were travelling for six months over in their fair country, we decided to go to South Dakota to attend the biggest motor bike rally in the world,1000s of motor bikes turn up from all over the world to attend this 10 day event. We were camped at a RV camp ground called Glencoe biggest camp ground in the world they use as their advertising motto. So you can imagine our surprise when this guy next to us was yelling out to his partner that is was going to go out all their thongs on the line. We learnt no he was not strange he was talking about underpants and knickers.

The English also think of underwear when we say thongs. So my cousin was not impressed, said 'How revolting' when I told him about the lovely beach wedding where they all wore thongs. Had to send a pic to clear things up.

Not so long back I left my orthotic thongs outside the van overnight, got up in the morning and found them scattered far and wide, one had been chewed through the strap and not repairable. At around $50 bucks a pair for orthotic thongs an expensive lesson. Luckily the caravan park sold thongs for $5 a pair, so bought a pair of them to carry on with. Possibly possums...
I should have learnt from a long ago experience, left my ordinary thongs outside at a basic roadhouse caravan park and the next day they were some distance away from the van in different directions. Had been chewed a bit but both still wearable. Only other person in the park was a grader driver with his dog, so I assume it was his dog.

In the "olden days" when I was camping alongside my Landcruiser I used to leave my shoes under the camp bed and they were always there where I left them, so I could slip my feet into them first thing. The most prominent dingo residence is Nullarbor Roadhouse, and I never lose one, thong, flip flop or jandal, for the bi-lingual.

The reason for the critters to take your footwear is because of the salt from your perspiration. They are attracted to the salt and the list of critters that may borrow your footwear is not limited to dingoes or dogs and may include anything that has legs.
Murphy's Law of the bush also says that the further you are from a replacement source, the more likely it is to happen.
Take them to bed with you and there will not be a problem.

As in Aus different regions have different slang along with generations. Where I was raised in the USA (Washington, the state of) thongs were not underwear they were what you put on your feet. Now when I go back I hear 'flip-flops' used at times too.
