We are back from our cruise around Vanuatu and Noumea. It was a terrific experience all up but we definitely prefer caravanning/RVing anytime.
However we had the most terrific send off with Sydney's Vivid Light show in full
Hi Robbie, a female friend and I are going on a P & O cruise in August, the first for both of us, just a week around the Pacific. I've been told that unless you drink from dawn to dusk we there's not much to enjoy - just wondering if anyone else has anything to add?

Hi Wild 1. IMHO, if you do that, you'll miss so much. What's the point of going ? You could stay home, and have more money to spend on drinks.
For future reference, any-one doing a Pacific Cruise, and wanting to see the "Land Jumpers" on Pentecost Island, should go between April and June. That's when they perform this Ritual.

That first shot is a stunner, Robbie. Pity about the second being a tad out of focus. Also interesting that you find RVing preferable to cruising. I like the independence of being at the helm myself.

Friends have just come back from 5 weeks of cruising. They decided to go as they enjoy it and found it cheaper to do than take their caravan to Tassie. What a pity that's the case. Overseas cruise lines get our $ instead of Australian states.

Cruising in the normal sense of going on an ocean liner has had very little appeal for me. However I recently did two cruises with Odyssey Expeditions (max 20 passengers), one from Fremantle to Broome via the Abrolhos Islands and Monte Bello Islands and another up in the Kimberley. I really enjoyed them and would do a similar cruise anytime.
Several years ago I did a similar style cruise (but geographically very different) on a 60 passenger boat around Prince William Sound in Alaska. That too was a rewarding experience.

Hey Wild1, you can do as much as you want to do or as little as you want to but you can find something to do to fill your entire day if you want without drinking it away. You will have a ball. I have been on three cruises, the shortest 14 days, the longest 25 days and thoroughly enjoyed them all.

We are off on a 90day cruise leaving Sydney on 13th July & going to the Mediterranean & back - 36 ports. We expect to have a great time. Love being a grey nomad & but also enjoy cruising.

I was told by my friend who went on the same cruise to vanuatu dont book the tours on The boat one tour was 120 bucks fifteen on the island

Luigi and I went on a P & O cruise for 14 nights to the Pacific Islands this time last year, and yes we had the Sydney lights the night before we departed. It was a wonderful start to our holidays :) We had never been on a cruise so it was very exciting and I might add everything I had ever dreamed about, we couldn't complain about a thing. Wild 1 don't worry about not drinking too much hubby and I don't either, maybe one or two but that is our limit, but when I came back home I tried thinking of a time when we were bored and I couldn't there was always something to do on the ship or doing the tours on shore. We actually booked our tours on the net through the P & O site and they were all organised weeks before we left. The one thing I like about that was that if you book through P & O they have a record of you going ashore and will wait for you if the tour is late but if you go on a private one they don't. I just felt a little more secure by knowing this lol would have hated to be left behind, although thinking about it some of those islands would be nice to be stranded on lol. You guys enjoy your cruising :)

We've recently done a trip on a boat called the True North, a Kimberley expedition to see the falls and the islands etc, VERY good. BUT.............. an awful lot of deisel and camping spots were used up in the cost and for me I couldn't really say that the cost justified the trip, this was my first cruise type trip. TMOF (The Minister Of Finance) has done several cruises over the years, mainly as part of her job role on the QE2 and loved every minute, but for me, give me the caravan and the tug anyday of the week. Couldn't wait to get back on terra-firma. Just my own opinion for what it's worth.

My wife and I spent 8 nights crusing from Sydney to Fremantle on the Queen Mary 2, it was an amazing experience. How will caravaning compare? We hope to find out early 2014. Over the next 6 months we will be busy putting our house up for sale and researching caravans and towing vehicles suitable to tour around our great wide land and enjoy our home away from home. We will keep in touch with our research and experiences on this forum, as you all do.
