I'm going to be getting to Townsville in a few days (prob around Friday) and I'm looking for somewhere cheap to stay - doesn't have to be fancy. I've heard that there's a place called the Polocross club in a suburb called Stewart (prob spelled incorrectly, my apologies) but I can't find it in any of my usual reference sites and can't even my mate Mr Google is letting me down this time. So can any of you knowlegable people out there help me out with some information on the Polocross club or any other campsite that won't break the bank
Thanks, Lynda

Check out my previous two updates Linda you might find something that suits.
Just a slight warning if I may though, this weekend is a long weekend here in down town Townsville, Show Day Holiday Monday and will mean the show grounds will be out for camping as well.
I think there is also a Motor Home Convention or similar at Ross River Reserve this weekend too, something like that anyway.

Lynda, There is free camping at Saunders Beach, Toomulla Beach and Bluewater. They are just north of Townsville, but very popular this time of year. Good luck.
Cheers Sol

Have heard that Black River CP is reasonably priced - just north of the town.

Thanks everyone. Perhaps it would be a good idea to hang around Home Hill for a few more days. I didn't know that you could stay at the showground - it's not listed in Camps7. Is this new? Where is it and how much? Is it available most of the time (except show time obviously)? I like showgrounds. I'm currently at the Home Hill showground which is an interesting place. It lay unused for about 20 years then recently someone had the bright idea of mowing the grass (I believe it was shoulder high), painting the amenities and otherwise tarting it up a bit with a view of allowing camping for a small fee. They took in the first vans just over a week ago and it's proving extremely popular. It's not all settled yet though. Some members of council are opposed to allowing camping here (now THERE'S a surprise) while more enlightened types recognise the economic benefits to the town's businesses. There's a big council meeting tomorrow which is expected to make some decisions on the showgrounds future. Right now it's $10 a night for a powered site but that could change in the near future. Incidentally this is not instead of the famed Home Hill Comfort Stop it's in addition too. The Comfort Stop is full too at the moment.

The Showgrounds is operated as a "caravan park" is next door to the showgrounds, so may still be available - there are a lot of permanents there - but well placed spot - think we paid $26 or 28 with power last winter.
Interesting re the Home Hill showgrounds - a really good idea for people who want to stay over more than the allowed time at the comfort stop - there is a caravan park down the back as well - could be 9th or 10th Avenue - small, but looked ok.

Many stay at Alligator Creek Roadhouse, however it's very noisy. I suggest you turn right at the Alligator Ck Roadhouse, proceed straight ahead over the railway line, go straight ahead and you'll come to a local boatramp/camping fishing spot. There are no signs posted and it's very quiet but not far off the main drag.
If you are staying in Ayr/Homehill check out the local boatramps.
Cheers

NeilandRaine I think that's one I already checked out - they're full until 9 July. But thanks for the tip.
