There has been rumours for a while. The owner denies it I believe. Would not surprise me though.

Talking to nomads who tell me that Big 4 group have bought the publishing rights to the Camp bible. Now why would they do that????? Do they want to shut it down??? Any one else heard this.

There was a thread about this on here a few months ago and it was proven to be false at that time. I can't remember the details but it might have been something else they had bought and not Camps Aus Wide.

I put a reply to the previous one that I had spoken to the owner of CAW and they said it was false and they had no intention of selling it to Big 4 or anyone else....

Could not see why the big 4 or any other chain would want to buy the bible, when they have enough clout regarding closing free/ low cost camps down .

I have been using the iPad version of WikiCamps and have found that pretty good this trip. Able to upload photos, make comments good or bad etc. sorry if off topic.

We have the CAW book, but I also have Wikicamps on my iPad, I do like this as you can honestly comment on what you experience, plus you can upload photos as well. So instead of having to ask people what it's like, you can read it first...unless there are no comments yet...lol

If you look on the CAW website you will see they also sell apps for phones and further down the page for GPS listing all the campsites on CAW, I bought the GPS one (about $20 from memory) to use in conjunction with the book, it can be easy to miss a turn off if using the book only.

I'm with Dawa after our last trip. We found that all the sites listed would be full by about 3pm and way over crowded. We managed to find quite a few spots by checking out tracks near rivers and bridges etc or just tracks off into the scrub out west.

Depends on when you use them troopy, off season they are usually ok and still handy to know where they are.
Even during the main season, I found the ones coming across the top from Katherine to Broome ok and good to know the ones that did have toilets, some long drops, others a bit more sophisticated......

On our trip from Newcastle, Mildura, Port Augusta, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Mt Isa, Townsville then back home via Emerald, Roma, St George, Walgett, Narrabri, Tamworth and home to Newcastle over the last month there were few uncrowded ones. And even the ones down dirt road up to15K were pretty full. We did find some unlsted ones though.

I did a trip down south WA earlier in the year, just after school holidays and found it ok too. Cosy Corner was chock a block though, I ended up camping at Shelley Beach (both in CAW) nearby which has a camping fee, however the Rangers were on strike so ended up being a freebie, hardly anyone there on the first day until a hang glider club turned up next day.
Most of the freebies were ok though. From what I have read here I suspect that the freebies over east seem to have a lot more RV campers than most places, although north WA (eg; Broome etc) can get chockers too during the main camping season.....
