There were some thieves a number of years ago that were working their way around Oz by stealing from the parks they stayed in, one method they used was to quietly cut through the canvas/vinyl of camper trailers and tents while people were sleeping or out and stealing their wallets/valuables. They were eventually caught at Kununurra, the police were tracking them by the thefts at various parks along their route.....
Edit: I bought a metal locking cabinet from IKEA I am installing in my rig, not a safe and although screwed to the vehicle from inside the cabinet is not without it's limits, but will be ok for locking away some things and may give some protection from the opportunistic thief...

I guess it pays to not have anything of value in sight. If the thieves can see it they will steal it.

yep. keys are so much more valuable. they can steal your car and if they can get ahold of your purse or wallet they will know your home address and hey presto, an aladins cave and you won'teven know about it. even if you get keys back, who knows, they could have had them cut also. Everyone, keep caravan keys and home keys separate and keep caravan park toilet keys separate to your car keys and caravan key. find a place in the van that is out of sight and not easily found.

RR, thanks for the heads up on Bunnings. Never thought of them for security items. They have a range of safes on their (excellent) website, along with some good 4.6 metre cable locks I could use to secure solar panels. The safe I think you are referring to (about $29) has a cable, which would make it ideal to attach inside my camper trailer (ordinary bolt-down safes not much good, as there is nothing convenient or solid to bolt them down to).
That would make wallet, phone, vehicle keys etc much more secure than my present system of tucking them under the mattress, which is neither secure nor very comfortable! It also tends to press the "unlock" button on the vehicle remote, thus leaving it open!
They also offer a laptop-size safe for $85 which I will have a look at. Cheap insurance in modern times.
Cheers, Tony

That's sounds like a good idea. Anything that is a deterrent. I've been toying with with much the same thing for the camper to lock the computer in. A couple of years ago while in Brisbane we brought a lockable firebox from Aldi. Met a couple of caravanners who installed one as a safe. It's the perfect size to hold ipads wallet camera, just a bit small for my laptop.

I bought a metal locking cabinet too..........it's called a HiAce, and I lock it when I leave it or go to sleep. Used to live at Josephine Falls and tourist vehicles were frequently targeted. I'm not paranoid but I worked for this and I'm going to protect it best I can.

I looked in Bunnings and saw the range of safes referred to in an earlier post, they also had a range of locking cabinets there also.
