depending on so many thing what engine petrol of diesel
how big is the van high roof or low
MANY years ago they used the Borg Warner C4 Autobox, a real B45t4rd of a thing and failed on a regular basis, a heavy old lump that was "Fords" answer to the automatic world!! MMMmmm
They also used something called a Duramatic, but reading another website that deals only with Transits, they turn auto's into manuals as they are not reliable enough!!
Hope something helps from the links above.

I heard the same thing somewhere Janette, but also they were bringing out some new ones, but not sure about that.
You might be able to get more info on this UK site Rocket;
We have a 2006 diesel - Auto (Bus) mid to high roof converted to a Camper. Purchased it at 100,000. We have travelled from Adelaide to Darwin across to Broome and down the West coast to Perth and home again across the Nullarbor, travelled approx 10,000kms in 8 weeks.
The only problem was when we 1st got it the transit was slipping out of gear especially when under stress of many and I mean "many" gearing changes (it didn't like Sedan Hill) tight cornering and steep incline and decline.
The service guys bleed the gearbox and we have had no problems since. They also commented the Local Tour bus operator had the same problem. Once they did this he has not had the problem either.
Back to the mileage we sat on approx 100 km per hour and best we got was 11litres, worst was 14 litres to the 100, obviously planting the foot occasionally.

In regards to the Transit, I think it might be the USA that have brought out a new auto model, but not available in Oz, google Ford Transit USA to check.
As well as the auto's having problems in earlier models in Oz, I believe that some earlier models had gear box problems, but not sure which years, my 2008 manual has been find so far. A call to the RAC/NRMA should throw some light on that for you.
To be honest, I have not checked my diesel consumption on mine yet either loaded or empty, but it doesn't seem to be excessive, the figures for the new ones show 8L per 100 kms, but doesn't say whether loaded, unloaded, highway or suburban cycle, see this link;
