I pay my way and always have however I'm still laughing at the irony of my recent experience with a new ANZ Access card to my Savings Account with a new "swipe" feature invented by some mental Banking Midget....if you lose it it can be used many times for purchases under $100 with impunity until you report its loss as no identification of pin or even a pass through their machine is required for purchases under $100......my Bank tells me there are already many instances of multiple under $100 purchases in a single day by thieves as they become aware of this new exciting security scam......if you believe that I am giving the game away,then do what I have just done..you have to phone the Bank and request they "REMOVE" the new swipe feature they have put on....I choose to start my story now......

Recently filled my tank at discount servo $91....I go in to the console where we all line up...you know the ones....I grab a 2 litre bottle of milk while waiting....my turn he scans the milk $2.53, and I hand my discount card and state bowser No10....as I tell him its a new card and do I place into the machine or pass it through down the side?...BIP..BIP I hear...he states all done Pal its already paid for as its under $100 and  its got the new swipe feature..the machine has already read it..and I have barely put the card anywhere near his machine.....I said how did it know which account of the cheque account or savings account I have.....he says to me and all the now most interested folk behind me....this machine reads it and debits it and they're great as he does not have to do the extra work of having it put through his machine.. 'modern technology' he states.... and flourishes my card in the air for all to see.....now this  hoary old retired Bank Manger, me, who does not have his glasses on and can barely see the receipt he has thrust into my hand...and he already has the hairs standing on the back of my neck and my schakles well and truly wrankled....does not wish to cause further fuss to all those waiting behind me....takes my receipt and exits..rather crestfallen.....drive home and my wife looks at the receipt, I  relate my story to her as I get my reading glasses and sees you guessed it..... TOTAL $2.53....I wonder how my discount card 8c tried to handle that one when he put it through.. with his 'New Technology'......my first thoughts are what a great card and facility $93.53 for $2.53....now I feel bad/elated/naughty/ bu-gg-er them/dirty, a winner over Technology, yet my first inadvertent scam and a fugitive....are there wanted posters of me now waiting in the servo?...I wont know I wont go back just in case...I get another lecture on 'The New Technology'....I do however now have a 'swipeless card'...at my stage of life in Gods waiting room I have the time to put in a simple 4 number pin and hit enter for the rest of my life....now what was that pin number again...ho yes my postcode number, that's it!..now where do I live again?.......I choose to end my story now.......

How could this be your fault,when you acted in good faith.

I would be thinking it is the stupid banks fault for introducing such a system,before they sorted out any miss use of the card.

How flawed is this system if you the honest Mr citizen uses it and it fails, can you imagine how a thief would have a bonanza of a time if he got his/her hands on this type of set up.

On the topic of Credit cards my mate rang me last night to tell me last week while he and wife were out fishing someone got into their house and stole there two credit cards,they could not use them to purchase any thing as they had some secret code on the end of the numbers, but because they failed to purchase anything with them,they must have been p...d off so they donated from there card $500 to the RDF service apparently you can donate from a card with out using this code if done over the inter net.

I to have two cards with this wave and pay system. I read that as Keith19837 mentioned they can be scanned when it is still in your wallet or purse.

I purchased off ebay RFID blocking card protectors to stop this from happening. For about $12 I got 4 card protectors and two passport protectors apparently they can scan your passport details as well.

Console operator concluded the transaction...told me "it was all paid for"......I acted in good faith......they made a mistake utilising their 'new technology'.....where is any wrong doing?......I believe its in all Grey Nomads' interests to be aware that the new "wave" cards can bring you undone as it is inconceivable to my mind, and I believe most other reasonable thinking folk, that a product with such obvious limitations for fraud could even be introduced in the first place.....one has to contact their Bank per phone to remove it....they could not do it at my Branch......how ridiculous is that...they introduce a product addition that you have not requested and then the onus is on you to remove it......go figure...Hoo Roo

P.S. What does one do for money if some thief has gone on a spending spree of under $100 purchasers with your money and you are waiting for the Bank to investigate and make restitution....have you ever seen how long they take with a MasterCard fraud while they investigate and then eventually replace your funds...why would it be any different with these "wave" cards and how many dishonest claims of fraud will also be made by those actually using their own cards but stating it is someone else in their household  or elsewhere that must have used it..?....

Go back in time about 30 - 40 years when we all had "real" bank books - if you lost it and someone found it then they had access to all your bank details. Your signature was also in the back of the bank book visible under UV light. They knew all of your deposits/withdrawals and savings - and all they had to do was forge/copy your signature on a withdrawal form and all your money was gone in a flash, yet we thought "safe as a bank" To replace the lost bank book mean't your assets were frozen till the bank was happy.

If a "Russian mafia type" happens to skim your credit card electronic details, all he will gain is the ability to then somehow convert the data and imprint on a counterfeit card so that he can then buy items under $100 until you discover the fraudulent transactions which the bank will alert you to.
For items over $100 you must use the PIN which only you know. For the risk and benefit, this sort of theft is extremely remote, if at all possible IMHO.

Nowdays the banks guarantee to honor fraudulent transactions and going on bank profits, they know what they are doing.

Really, it's a win - win situation.

So am I a bad person?............This is really for YOU to decide but I am sure the consol operator who will have to make up the shortfall in the till would like to see you again.  It is not HIS fault, neither the service station's fault that the banks now use this technology.  

No doubt if you told him the pump used he didn't hear you as you were asking how to use the card.  

You must have been in Hicksville if nobody knew of these cards as they have been around for several years.  

By the way, they do NOT work just by standing by the counter, the card has to virtually touch the payment screen to work.

I just found out that my existing card had somehow been 'updated' or pre loaded with this technology. (I've had this card for 3 years).   The servo guy tapped it and; to my surprise, away it went.   I am curious though.... What happens if you're walking through the checkout with cash whilst your card is in your pocket.   Is there any way that the 'reader' can scan the card if you're close enough?    My bank says 'no' but anecdotal evidence seems to indicate otherwise.  I know that some security lock swipe cards can be read by a scanner at up to a metre.  Maybe I'm just seeing the dark side of things these days.

I reckon they're the greatest thing since sliced bread and just as secure as any other form of exchange.
It's possible maybe even more secure because if you lose your wallet with $100 cash and a Visa/Mastercard inside and the wallet is found, the finder can steal your cash and then wave your credit card and rack up a heap of sub $100 purchases. You've lost your $100 cash but any purchases made with the card will not have to be paid by you. See this snip from the Visa website:

 Funny you should mention this.   Not just the police but prospective employers also do this.   A few people lost their jobs this way.  One particular case was a young woman who obtained a job at interview stage subject to a favourable criminal/probative history check.   The young woman posted on a social media site some comment about getting this  'boring job' with an 'awful  company' but the pay was great.   She received notification from said company that her services were not required due to the posted comment.

Similarly, I obtained a temporary position in a government allied company and during training we were told that the company had gone through the various social media and other sites checking on applicants.   They culled those  applicants  who were affiliated with or had social media comments that were seemed 'inappropriate'.   I keep telling my kids to be careful what they post as it may affect a job application or promotion within an existing job.  It's amazing what can be pulled off the internet these days.

For what it's worth.  

A little while back, I purchased a couple of small items from Big W and stood rather awkwardly with card in hand waiting for the girl to hand me the Epos machine. When she handed me the receipt I was all the more goggled eyed. I gave her a strange look and she said that the transaction had gone through using this new technology and proceeded to explain it to me.

I know these things have a protective layer of defence against unauthorised use, but what happens if a clever Russian Mafia type has the right device in his possession to read my card as I walk past him? Does he then have access to all my banking details?

You are right, you do need to advise the bank asap if you lose your card but, they do promise to reimburse any lost monies while the card is in the wrong hands.

What you can do to reduce inconvenience is as I do, just keep enough funds to last you a day or 2, couple hundred bucks say.  With my bank anyway I can instantly transfer funds from my savings acc to my debit card account using an app on my phone.  I could, if I was so paranoid, have almost nothing in the account, fill with fuel and note the cost then transfer that amount while walking to the cashier.

You really do need to keep up, the technology is already in place so that you won't even need to carry a card soon, the payment can be made by touching your (smart)phone to the console reader.  Don't lose your phone lol.

I was glad to be reminded about the Pay Wave cards. I'd prefer not to have that facility, but if that's what you're stuck with, then an easy way to protect your card (if you don't have a special protective wallet) is to wrap aluminium foil around it. I only know this as "Google told me so", and I have now placed a double layer of foil around my cards, a bit of tape on the sides to hold it together and they still fit nicely in my wallet. I'll eventually purchase a protective wallet, but for now this method will do. I also read that if you place your cards together then this will confuse a scanner. Cheers all,

As to "But what is a minute or two here or there anyway....."?  When there are thousands of people a day going through the checkout that is a lot of minutes of lost time.

I'm with ANZ and reduced my "limit" from $100 to $35 (the minimum).

What concerns me is IF you lose your card AND DON'T REALISE IT, you therefore can't report it missing. What happens in the interim beween being lost and reporting it it to the bank???? TRy to get your money back then.

This is the first I've heard of such a thing. How do I know if my card has this feature?
