Hey there Onedodger, l use a Ford Ranger 3ktr turbo diesel Auto to tow with, l believe Mazda and Ford share most of their design and running gear in these Models. We tow a 2.5 tonne van and haven't had a problem with the Auto, l did however source a Revsense Diesel chip just to give me that extra little bit of oompf when needed. They say not to tow in overdrive, but we have found on flat ground without strong cross winds etc, that it will pull allday in overdrive. We even use cruise control while towing without any problems at all or any unnecessary kickdowns when starting to climb, simply press overdrive off and you will have all the power you need....Hope this helps, we really thought long and hard about our tow vehicle and whether or not to change/update, but with abit of research and a small investment in the chip is all we needed to give us what we needed.....l might also add that l,m a right leg amputee, so l really need the auto as changing, manual gears is no longer an option for me.
Cheers

Sorry Onedodger our last trip was from Victoria up to Hervey bay and back, went up thru Dalby and the Glass House mountains and came thru Beaudesert and Cunninghams gap our average fuel consumption was 6.2km per ltr or 16ltr-100km, which is around what we expected, we had an avegage speed of 98kph which is alittle faster than we would normally travel, but it was a rush trip unfortunately...but it had a happy outcome!!.......Hope that all helps

We've been towing our 5th-wheeler for nearly five years with a 2008 BT-50 manual and have no complaints. the GCM for the BT-50 is 5.5 tonnes and our rig is pretty close to that. Fuel consumption when towing has averaged around 17 L/100 km, which seems pretty fair from what we've read.
I gather the newer BT-50 has a somewhat higher GCM, but I doubt we'll manage to upgrade without a BIG lottery win! :(
