Ilfracombe is a great alternative to the waterhole free camp at Longreach Or the overcrowded CPs ... If you don't mind paying for accommodation!
Very helpful and friendly staff, they personally take you to your site, they will actually walk you through the reversing into position. They asked if we had aircon and when I said no, she said she would put us in a shady site. $3 per load for washing, happy hour each night although we did not participate as we were out each day. Amenities are spotlessly clean. artesian spa 5 mins away, pub next door, although not noisy, basic supplies at shop 2 blocks away, several local sightseeing places, 25 klm from Longreach ... Just dont drive anytime after 4pm, millions of Roos ...
Also whilst you are in Longreach, I can also highly recommend the Aussie Outback Sunset Tour which includes cruise on Thompson River, 2 course dinner and coffee under the stars and a wonderful show by Heartland Theatre, a duo singing Aussie songs - mostly their original material, stories, jokes etc. these 2 musicians wrote and sing the song This is the Year (of the Outback) which became the theme for the Year of The Outback some years back. It was a treat to be entertained by them for an hour or 2. Well worth the $89 each which was part of our special treat for the trip.

We were at Illfracombe last year, superb entertainment at Happy Hour, would go back there any day just for that, took ages to stop laughing, the owners wife did a fantastic comedy routine and her friend sang all those lovely old Patsy Cline hits and any requests were quickly sung as well it was wonderful can thoroughly recommend anyone to stay there.

We were in Longreach in June and did that Aussie Outback Sunset Tour which includes cruise on Thompson River. It was a bit cold, had to get close to the fire, but it was a great night. The 2 blokes entertaining were great.
We also did a tour of Strathmore Station about 15 mins drive towards Jundah. Great tour and extremely informative commentary by the owner. She explained absolutely everything about how it all runs in great detail. Gives you a greater understanding of how tough things can be in the outback.
