4.2 Cab Chassis towing limited to 2500 kg , we have one .... got some mods done & Signatory Engineer upgraded GCM to 6200 kg , takes towing to over 3000 kg ....new VIN issued by WA Licensing .... noted on insurance policy ... ute is good , load it up (can still carry 900 kg on back) and tow in 4th gear at 90 k/hr

Thanks for the info Cruzing Cruze and Freehazzas,6 cyl 4.2 multi point injected turbo intercooled 5 speed man.
I did hear that some Patrols have an overheating problem because of the size of the radiator??

The 4.2 turbo is the way to go - they cost a premium over the (hand grenade) 3.0 turbos but are primitive in design but very reliable. From memory you can get a coil or cart spring rear end. Check the Patrol forum...here is an interesting thread:

I have been towing a 3.5 tonne Kedron with my 2003 4.2 manual GU patrol for nearly 3 years...my vehicle had 85000 k,s on the clock when I purchased it and was as new...It does get warm in hot weather going uphill when towing, but it is very easy to control, just change down a few gears keep the revs at 2800 rpm and let the engine do what it was designed to do, keep an eye on speed..revs...temp..and all is fine. I have spoken to my brother in law who has the same vehicle 2004 and it does it also. we have been informed that a bigger radiator does not fix the problem....I have removed unnecessary items like the spot lights in front of the radiator, so as to improve air flow. I do still have bull bar and winch.
Also keep in mind that the downforce on the towball is included in the vehicles maximum payload. So the vehicle must not be to overloaded.
As for the towing capacity, it is on the back door of vehicle when you find it. But I have a vague idea that the trayback manual has a lower tow rate than the patrol wagon of the same motor because the vehicle mass is less in the tray back.
In summary it is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. And most experts are envious... A good one is hard to find with low mileage.
hope this is of help...PM me if you need more info...

Had a similar isue with the old tojo tug, best cure was to remove the rubber seal under the rear of the bonnet & space to the bonnet up 10mm on the hinges, no more prob. Like wise have a bar , lights & winch fitted.
