We are planning to drive between these 3 towns shortly as part of a longer trip. The 2 routes we are considering are the Mt Lindsay Highway and the road through Bonalbo and then along the Bruxner Highway.
RACQ trip planner indicates little difference in time or distance so it comes down to the most pleasnt drive.
Any comment on either route would be appreciated

Dont know the route but last week we stayed at the Showgrounds in Tenterfield. Lovely spot. Water to hook up to the van. Supposed to turn up at the caretakers house to pay...we did this but apparently the caretaker is on holiday. We camped there and waited for someone to come collect our money...went looking for someone to pay but nobody there to collect money. Stayed the night and left the next day. Really nice spot!! Dump station too!!

Good info, but for the time being we have friends living at Tenterfield so would probably stay with them.
Last time we were at Tenterfield I seem to recall we drove along the Mt Lindsay road to a waterfall not far out of town. I seem to think the road was not too flash, but that was a couple of years ago.

And this Kiwi was laughing all over the place when we read the sign ''Woodenbong''...ha.......Couldn't believe the name.
We stayed at Levuka....neat 4wd spot....saw a couple of good camping areas that you could freedom camp at....beautiful drive on a summers day through the area
cheers

Can't comment on the Mt Lindsay Highway but I drove from Tenterfieldto Woodenbong along the Bruxner Highway then through Bonalbo and Urbanville (have I got that name right?) a couple of weeks ago. The road is in reasonable condition - not great but reasonable. There are sections where you'll need to go slow but they tend to be the most scenic spots. Your passenger will enjoy them but you might not see too much on account of concentrating on the road.

Thanks for that. We don't mind going slow, especially if the scenery is good. We plan to camp at Urbenvale, so might get some really current info from a fellow camper heading in the other direction. If relevant, I will post another message.
Thanks to all.

Woodenbong Racecourse was a lovely spot to camp with a great rural view.
I must tell you BJC, that the road from Woodenbong via Urbenville and Benalbo would have to be one of the worst stretches or road we have travelled. We were wrapped when we hit the Bruxner Highway and then headed to Tenterfield.
Will never travel it again.
However other may relish this sort of conditions, but not us.

Is that the road that goes through Tooloom NP? If so, its beautiful scenery but a terrible narrow steep winding rough road!

I think that we will be on the Mt. Lindsay h'way unless we find out that there have been major and recent rad improvements on the Bonalbo road. Thanks for all the feedback.

Welcome in transit to the forum from us. I think that would be a wise decision. My memory of the Bonalbo road isn't a good one either.
