While we were doing one of our much enjoyed trips along the mighty Murray River,this camp spot will always be a favourite of ours....It is Called Psyche Bend about 12ks s/e of Mildura.it is a spot steeped in history,probably not very surprising given that it is on the Murray.
Psych Bend houses Paych Pump Station which irrigates and drains water via electric driven pumps,but was originally irrigated via a magnificent pump and steam engine,built in England and transported to Oz in 1891.
It was fully operational until 1959. It was restored and is maintained by the Sunraysia Steam Preservation Society it is the only steam driven TANGYE operational pump of its type in the world.
The bpump station is open 3 days per week for visitors to take in this piece of history.
It is only operational 6 days per year.
It is located about 200 metres from where we were camped up foe a few days.
It is truly a great piece of history,inspired by Alfred Deakin who enticed 2 Canadian brothers who were developing irrigation systems in Southern California to come to Oz to develop the Mildura irrigation system.

Sounds like you are camped about the same spot we were in February last year. Pretty magic spot - just be out of there if it looks like rain.

The pumps are operating this coming Sunday if anyone interested is in the area.

Funny... history was never my fav subject at school but living history is a different matter. I'm always fascinated by historic buildings, old machinery, vintage cars and anything else that has a story to tell from the past. I'm with you Herbie... history can be great fun!
