As far as I know there is no free or even low cost camping on Phillip Island.
It really is geared for only staying in caravan parks.
When we were there last we left the van in a c/ van park in Sorrento and stayed in our tent at the motor sport circuit as we were there for the Moto GP. But it still wasn't free to camp there, everyone out to make a buck down that way from the tourist.

Bass Coast is free camp free Poppy. They are the most unfriendliest Shire around I reckon. Funny thing is though, they want the tourist's but don't really cater for them. How do I know I here you ask. I live in that area.
If you want a CV Park close to Phillip Island and reasonably priced, check out Coalfields CV Park in Wonthaggi, nice place and nice people, 035671798. NO NOT GO TO MINERS REST CV PARK, in Wontahggi.

Doug ,the South Gippsland Shire and the Bass Coast Shire are tarred with the same brush. They cover a large area and provide very little for the traveller . There are few areas to even stop on the side of the road and have a break from driving,I think there is still one location for free camping, near Poowong. Cheers Peter

Poppy Sore Eye I lived on Phillip Island for 10 years and I can tell you all of the above comments are correct if you are not one of the old families on the Island you are not accepted only tolerated the are no free camps over there hope I haven't upset anyone by my comments but that is what we found while living there.

Hey, You could allways camp on Doug's front lawn, especially as seeing he is not home. I would come my self and join the party but do not have a tug.

Mmmm, Mr cheeky Kiwi is your new name I think. I think you have too much time on your hands Brandt and need to get your tug back pronto. Enjoy the party at my place cos I aren't there I am a long way from home.
Dazelled wombats are not allowed in the village but Gypsies are. I arranged that before I left.
