I am heading to Tassy for a couple of months, and would like some suggestions re free-camping, and whether I can use my firebucket at that time of year ?

Hey Barry, like you I am not sure. We are heading over on Aussie Day for 7 weeks so have been looking in the camps book trying to work out a rough route and spots to stay. Also been looking back trough the Caravan and Motor home mags as well anyway be interested on others thoughts and you never know we might see you over there somewhere.

Re the camping free/low cost in Tasmania ,maybe best to just play that one by wait and see until you get over there,that's what we intend to do when we go Jan/ Feb as a lot of the so called free camps are free no more.

I dispute people saying most of the free camps in Tassie are no longer free. Some have gone to low cost but there are thousand of free camps in Tassie

I thought that is what I posted that a lot of the free camps are free no more,meaning they have gone to user pay ,which can only be a good thing for all concerned .,,,Yes no doubt there is still free camping over there like all over Oz but the ones that get flogged to death by certain people for weeks/ months on end ...end up getting these places closed or turned into user pay and in a lot of instances a limit is put in place as to how long one can stay.
In no way was I bagging Tasmania .. I love the place but all places as pristine as Tassie is must have some protection from abuse .

Not really having a crack at you but I reckon there is 30 or more free camps within a 50km radius of my home in Smithton, some are within 200 meters of caravan parks, most are next to either fresh water or the sea. The free one I speak of have no amenties at all but the cheap ones normallv have a long drop and water.

Hi Blaze glad we got that sorted, As i mentioned in my post regarding some people over staying in a particular area it only makes it harder for everyone in the end.

We were in Tassie for 5 weeks in Feb and March this year, what a great place. We did not stay in any CP's as the free and low cost community campsites were all in great locations and often had better facilities. We did a lap anticlockwise with a loop through the middle but wished we had booked for 10 weeks! Some of the best spots were Penguin(next to Lifesaving Club), Boat Harbour, Stanley, Lake Mackintosh, Strahan Golf Club($10), Brady's Lake, Lake Pedder, Shipwright Point ($10),Geeveston Oval, Triabunna ($5), Mayfield Beach, Bay of Fires St Helens, Lake Barrington, Deloraine, Freycinet Rivers and Rocks campground, Kempton($5 inc power), Devonport(Coles Beach). We also stopped at Ulverstone, Smithton, Shelly Beach and StMary's and saw lots of other campsites in towns we passed through. Most locals were very friendly and wanted tourists in their towns, we will definitely go back Note we stayed in accomodation in Hobart and did not use the van. Have a great trip and look at campsites on the various caravan forums and ozcamps as well as the book and you will have too many to choose from.

We had 134 nights in Tassy - November 2012 - March 2013 - we used caravan parks only four of those nights, and three of those were at the Glenorchy (Hobart) Showgrounds - some of the free or low cost camps we stayed in all around Tassy had much better standards than these showgrounds!!!!!
Low cost - $5 night at the Allora hotel for self contained vehicles on Bruny Island.
Free - Dunally Pub on the way to Port Arthry.
Free at River Rocks on the way to Freycinet NP.
Scottsdale - Northeast Park - $4 for hot shower, free dump point and fresh water.
Heaps of others - Cosy Corner, Lagoons Beach, ****le Creek, Judbury, too many to mention.
Rod has listed some good ones up there!!!!

Barry - make sure you do the yellow boat ride when you go over to Bruny Island - well worth it! Amazingly exhilarating - out into the ocean, then full bore straight at cliffs, through narrow channels - further down into the Southern Ocean - bull seals at Friar Rocks, could almost reach out and touch them!!!!
