I'm not 100% sure of the Australia free WiFi situation..
But I did find in The USofA that the Large Food chain's had Free Wifi..
- Macca's
- starbuck coffee
- Burger King
they all had Free Wifi, which was not to bad to use..
In Australia I can't swear by it.. But check out Macca's and Hungry Jack's for free Wifi..
If they have it they will display a WiFi Sticker/notice some where visible..
when I was working in the Rialto tower's I dealt with Telstra and got to know a few of the tech's/programmer's there that dealt with the Free Wifi network.. If it still in place and maintained and half as good as I got in America.. you should try it..
1 - Get your Laptop to do a WiFi scan.. if fpr example Macca's is up it will pop up a WiFi network that is open..
2 - click to join the WiFi network..
3 - It should pop up a window show that you are connected.. no mater what browser you have it should put you thru their Login screen..
- just click thru and you should be connected to the network..
If the Network is there you can do you general Browsing/forum trolling.. Skype Call's etc..
- Make sure that you have a VERY good Virus Scanner just in case..
In America I did 95% of all internet connection Via Free WiFi..
! even have some very funny Story's Relating to me using that free Wifi but then that is for another Day..
So if you have Free WiFi use it as much as you can..

I have tried the McD while having a cup of tea only as they don't have Kiwi Scones but never seem to able to connect to there WiFi for some reason, it shows on my iPhone or iPad it's connected but won't allow me to actually do anything, no big deal though.

I've found most free wifi extremely slow, McD particularly, connection can be confusing too.

When we book into CPs now, I ask if they have free wi-fi.
I don't care if they have free TV, don't need it .... (or the jumping castle, or the carts for the kids etc) but I would come back when passing if they have wifi.

Just recently stayed in several CP's on the NSW coast and all had Wi Fi but in every case the quality of the connection was very poor and in some cases you had to go and sit near the office to get connected.
When I looked around the parks they seemed to have external antenna's in place in several places around the park but I don't think they were working, and on talking to the park management they didn't seem to have a clue as to the service they were providing.
Can only get better as only a few years back only a few parks had Wi Fi and and it wasn't free.
Travelled around the West Coast of the States 2 years ago for 8 weeks and never encountered a motel that didn't offer free Wi FI and these were only $60 a night motels.
If no free Wi Fi I use a Wi Fi modem connected to the 3g network and just load it with data for the length of the trip.
From time to time you can purchase these Telstra Wi Fi modems on special at Coles for $10 and they come with 1gig expiring in 30 days from the time you first activate them.
Cheers

Don't count on downloading a movie etc, most free download places have a limit, usually about 500 meg

Gday...
At the risk as sounding like a wet blanket, there is no such as a free lunch.
Free WiFi may mean you don't pay a fee to access. However, the cost of providing it is included in the tariff (for van parks etc) or in the food (with Maccas etc) or subsidised by the Council (hence ratepayers) in the case of libraries. So even if you access their WiFi such as Maccas and haven't bought anything - someone will be paying on your behalf.
As already stated be very careful using WiFi in these instances unless you have a very secure pooter - at minimum very good anti-virus/malware software and 'downloads', if available will be frightfully slow (usually), and quite probably limited.
Cheers - John
