Can anyone recommend a good towing route (with a 24' van) travelling Melbourne to Batemans Bay (departing Aug 2014)? Some folks have suggested Yass, Bungendore, Braidwood although I hear that Kings Hwy is undergoing significant road works. With a long and heavy load, (where possible) we are looking to avoid hilly regions or roads that are generally not suitable for our rig. Any advice or current recommendations would be appreciated. We're not up for a 'white-knuckle' drive and are prepared to take a longer route if road conditions elsewhere are more favourable.

Hi, we live in the Batemans Bay Area, and with family in Melbourne have travelled the Princes Highway many times - with and without a caravan. If you just want a straightforward trip with no nasty surprises then I'd suggest the Princes Highway is the way to go. The Yass, Bungandore, Braidwood route is an alternative way to go, but you will most likely encounter some roadworks on the Kings Highway, it is do-able with a large van, but a there's a couple of bits where it's a steep descent and a few hairpin bends. Whichever way you choose, have an enjoyable and safe trip.
Cheers,
Annie

Once again I must agree with Annie. I would be taking the Princes Hwy if I was travelling from Melb to BB.
We travelled to Canberra from Batemans Bay for medical appointment two weeks ago, so glad we allowed plenty of time to get there as we encountered six lots of roadworks on the way.
A couple of months ago the Kings Hwy was closed for an entire day, was supposed to re-open at 4pm, was closer to 5pm when it happened, along wait at the top of the mountain after a tiring day!
Whichever highway you take, travel safe. cheers Capricorn

I have travelled both ways and reckon the Princes Hwy is the way for sure.
Clyde Hill.......Nope, Clyde Mountain (Kings Hwy)

Welcome from us too Hotfrost. With a van that big you will probably feel more comfortable travelling around the Princes Hwy as all the others have said. Some lovely spots along the way to check out if you have plenty of time. We live on the far south coast of NSW too.

In all honesty after travelling the Kings Highway about 4 weeks ago.........find another way.
We drove from Cowra to Batemans Bay, it was raining overcast and the road was slippery. It was our first trip away and we were towing a 21ft van with an Isuzu Ute.
By the time we got to Batemans Bay there was no way I was travelling to Ulladulla that day.
It might be OK in the dry but it is steep, there are hairpin bends and most of it is single lane with a few pullovers to let traffic past.
I hated the road.
