we are planning a trip to Birdsville and was wondering if anyone has been that way lately and could suggest the best road in plus how bad is the Birdsville track for caravans

We are planning a trip in 2015 and would be coming in from Charleville via Qiuilpie. Would also like to know the condition of the road through to Birdsville. Is it sealed all the way, if not where is it gravel.

I hope to hell they haven't sealed it, more adventure traveling roads as our Grandfathers did. You want tar, the stick to the coast and leave the inland to us who enjoy as it is.

@ Lamb Chop
It is sealed up to about 100kms west of Windorah then gravel all the way.

If you do decide to do it, stop at the abandoned Betoota Pub (there is a toilet block opposite). Around the back of the pub is the grave of the last publican. The Birdsville Police will let you over-night there (or did in 2010)
Can anyone tell me what the road in from Bedourie is like as we will probably becoming down from Roper Bar or Lawn Hill

At that time the 15ft Millard with raised suspension and enforced "A" frame and chassis (done at Charleville engineering) The tug then was a 2003 Tojo duel cab Hilux. We did it 2010 during the floods and were caught at Birdsville (first time no races).

The road to Beetoota in 2012.

Short video clip.
We met Ziggy the Betoota publican many years ago. he was quite a character.
Somewhere I have a pic of him at the bar.
Cheers,
Peter

I met Ziggy when we stopped at Betoota on the 1999 Variety Club Bash.
The pub was closed but he showed us through it . The bar was as he had left the day he closed the pub. Even had 2 dirty glasses
and an opened pack of chips still on the bar.
He was still living there at the time.
Betoota bar in 2010.
