Just opened this week by the council an area behind the race coarse between the tennis courts & the footy oval.
Access is from McGregor st into the tennis court area, follow the signs down the gravel road for about 200mtrs, large area.
There is a dump point , toilets & water as you enter to tennis court entry.

Good on them now we all need to support this so more councils will take the same action. We always make sure we then spend money in that town even if it is a bit more expensive. So come on everybody support them

Just stayed on this site for two nights 10 and 11 aug. it was great.
The second evening a ranger came and told everyone that it was being closed down and the entrance will be padlocked.
Maybe someone who's been there since can confirm this.
Cheers.

Think you will find that it was only intended to be open for the peak tourist season (May, June, July)

I did post at an earlier date that this free camp was to be shut down for the month of august and there was to be a counsel meeting early September to review it,
obviously no-one took any notice. In the post I stated that I would get the info on it and post the outcome. The reason it was closed was that august is festival month
and the site was needed for other uses during the month. I will still get the info and post it even though I have now left Port Hedland and returned to the south.

As promised I have been in contact with the Visitors Centre in Port Hedland and have been advised that no definite plan for reopening the free stay
is in place at this time but the was advised that it will open most likely after the wet season so probably in May.
Local Councillors are still discussing the issue.

As of October 2021, it is once again free, for 72 hours (I think)
I saw the Ranger, moving on a gent, who was sleeping in his car
You have to be self contained, and not dropping water on the ground
