"John," the new seaman replied.
"Look, I don't know what kind of bleeding-heart pansy crap they're teaching sailors in boot camp these days, but I don't call anyone by his first name," the chief scowled. "It breeds familiarity, and that leads to a breakdown in authority. I refer to my sailors by their last names only; Smith, Jones, Baker, whatever. And you are to refer to me as 'Chief.' Do I make myself clear?"
"Aye, Aye, Chief!"
"Now that we've got that straight, what's your last name?"
The seaman sighed. "Darling, My name is John Darling, Chief."
"Okay, John, here's what I want you to do ...."

Oh sh*t, you know, some parents have a warped outlook on the names of their offspring. I knew a young lady who wanted me to help her buy a small car. I found what she wanted and started writing up the finance details. I knew her as Kelly Green, and as I was filling this out she stopped me & said that her first name was Teresa & she had adopted Kelly as her first name. I could see why.

I was actually in the Navy with a bloke whose name was "Col Darling". My Daughter who was also in the Navy served with a lad whose name was Staines - he became Seaman Staines. I kid you not

True Story:...as a Bank Manager in a S.A. country town, we had longstanding customers by the name of Kuhndt.....I could see my Staff fall apart, knowing one slip of my pronunciation, and I was a 'goner'.... every time I greeted them, when they invariably had their kids in tow....'Good Morning Mr & Mrs Kuhndt and how are all the little Kuhndt's today?'.....True...........Hoo Roo

My aunt's married surname is Fuks (Fuchs in German). Before she married, she was a nun.

"Fuchs" means "fox" in German. My aunt was in fact quite pretty -- not the plain, spinsterly stereotype at all.

True story. In Colac, Victoria there were a brother and sister (not sure if they are still around) Sydney and Pearl. You guessed it, there surname was Harbor!

Impossible to make these up..we had a Banking customer in large city Branch with a very responsible vocation...his name was Theodore Bear...and he signed all his cheques Teddy Bear.....
...another mega rich pompoous client insisted on being addressed by his first two initials...'NT'...I used to shudder when I heard my Staff all bid him farewell with "See You NT"......if you say it out loud you will understand my dilemma........he never caught on, he was so far up himself...lol.....Hoo Roo
