Hi all. Never done this trip before, so for those who have can you tell me please if the road is ok to travel on in winter? What is cell phone connection like? (I have OPtus... I know, I know.... terrible reception compared to Telstra.... but wasn't told that by Optus at the time I took the deal out ) Any good freecamps to recommend? Hows it for diesal stations?
Any advice gratefully received.

Hi Didi, the road is fine in winter, it is sealed all the way. You MAY get rain but that can get you anywhere anytime.
Plenty of diesel available, maximum between stations is around 200km between Baladonia & Norseman. Buy from Eucla not Border Village, often 15cpl cheaper there.
There are heaps of good free camps on the Nullarbor, Wikicamps is your friend.
Phone reception for you will be hit & miss but, are you so important you can't be unavailable for a couple days? If you were to get in trouble it is never too many minutes before someone comes past, not like the good old days.
It is a great trip, look around as much as you safely can you will be amazed at the wildlife you will see. Gives your eyes a bit of a rest from the white line too.
Take your time, travel in daylight and you will love the trip.

Love going over the Nullarbor - either way - also love WA - it is a huge state - and often long distances between towns up the coast, bit easier south of Perth - but lots and lots of free camps - Wikicamps and Camps Australia Wide

I note that you're from Victoria driving a campervan - so I'll assume you intend going across the Nullarbor towards Perth. At this time of year the prevailing winds tend to be westerly, southerly and south-westerly, so depending on the aerodynamics of your campervan it would most probably be advantageous to travel early in the day to avoid pushing into a wall of wind that can cause havoc to the fuel consumption.
Alternatively you can go up through the centre and turn left at Katherine over to Argyle and roughly follow the coast down and around through Broome, Geraldton, Perth, Albany, etc.
That way you get to avoid the cold of winter down south and you are better able to linger in a desirable area as you are always seeming to be heading home (psychological advantage). When you are in the west try and make time to visit the centre of WA - Merriden, Kalgoorlie and the other monolith - Wave Rock.

Hello didi I have just returned from a few days in Kalgoorlie from Bunbury WA Driving a car, (not towing anything), and sitting on the speed limit (due to an 800 kilometre trip each way, from home). I found some sections, of the Perth Kalgoorlie part of the Eyre Highway, a little not quite bumpy, but more a bit of swaying. If you feel your camper van slightly swaying from side to side, just slow down a little. There is a good chance that if you are not pushing it, as I was, you may feel no difference to any other part of the road Also have a nice trip
