Hi Guys. I have a 2014 Isuzu DMax SX diesel auto with 76K on the clock.
The van we tow weighs in loaded at about 2800kg and with us and the bits in the ute, we come in under spec weight. Tow ball weight varies, but around 120-130kg.
We have probably done about 30K towing the van.
I get it serviced according to the log book, and despite the book saying that some services do not require an oil change, I do it at every 10K.
Over the last 2-3K, I noticed its pinging from standstill up to about 20-30kmh (when possibly I cant hear it).
I don't have lead feet and always am the slowest (other than the blonde in front putting on her face - sorry ladies) away from the traffic lights - I don't believe in wasting fuel and wear on the motor by "booting it".
Its not smoking soot anymore than usual (and no more than other high compression diesels). I haven't had any work done on the motor other than log book servicing.
Any ideas???

What do you call "pinging" Fuel..engine??.
Much as you don't want to hear it.
2.8ton is realistically overweight for any ute. regardless of paper figures
or stated engine power.
A ute is a ute. small ones like these. 2.3/2.5ton MAX tow.
and keep your ute loaded to counteract the control
a weight of that size behind you can have.
I have 2 ton van, with exh and chip and conv lockup.
and consider it max weight for my dual cab D Max.ute.
IF you have to tow that weight. (Until the Scalies get on board.)
A Tuned (2 3\4--3in) Exhaust and Chip will help.
Also a converter lockup if Auto too.

I am no expert but pinging says to me that the fuel pump timing is out , get the timing checked or maybe the computer is having a bad hair day don't know in this will work or not but perhaps you could disconnect the battery for 5 min and reconnect to see if it will reset.

I had a 06 D4D , Hilux it started making a noise that sounded just like a petrol motor " pinging " it was a injector problem ,
I suggest you get the injector values checked ,

Had the same in my 08 colorado. Change fuel filter, change brand of fuel and see how that goes. Works for mine.

I would say it's running lean or build up of carbon in combustion chambers . EGR may have blocked up etc ? Fuel filters etc changed recently ?

I would say that is one of your problems. Diesel motors work best when you give them some real work. Give it a real work out every now and then (after you get your problem fixed.)
Have you referred the problem to your service people? What did they say?

Thanks guys for all the helpful comments and suggestions.
I wet into my local DMax dealer this morning and like having a sore tooth and going to the dentist, no pinging when they took it for a test drive.
However, they want me to leave it with them overnight so the motor is totally cold and then take it for a run before plugging it into their computer.
They think it could be an injector issue or carbon buildup - I didn't say in my original post here that as I work, I drive up our local freeway 10 times a week for about 30km at up to 110kmh (yep, the legal speed for some of it), so the motor gets a good workout regularly.
Its due a fuel filter change in 4K - at its 80K service and I only use Caltex, Shell (aka as Coles Express) or once in a blue moon, BP, when theyre not charging $130.9 a litre.
Otherwise its bee serviced according to the log book.
In terms of towing weight, I'm aware this is a very "topical" issue on this site with pros and cons advocates about the true towing ability of various utes. I chatted to the Isuzu service foreman today (as I have previously done at other dealerships) and he says 2.8T to tow is not overweight and Isuzu will stand behind its 3.5T claims....

It's not an issue with the tug . It's the control of weight .. There's bugger all weight in the rear of these vehicles .. You just can't beat physics !

Perhaps put your question on the Isuzu Owners Forum at ozisuzu.com.au. Plenty of info available on Dmax's

There's also a DMax and Colorado Forum, that I've seen, seemed to be some knowledgable types on there when I visited.

I got my Dmax a 40K service 2or3 weeks ago the fuel filter light came on about a week before service, it cost me $1400 to fix . Dirty fuel had to take fuel tank out and flush it out thought about another filter. On it. Not done it yet but thinking hard about it. That was a service as well in that price.

I change my Fuel filter with every engine (oil/filter) service (10k)
$43 a pop.
Cheap ins Most reckon..
Dave. Drop in next time you up this way.
I'll introduce you to a good single Malt.
You'll never touch those sour grapes again.
No matter what colour. Yukkkk.
40/80/120k are big services. A decent mechanic can do.
As long as he has the computer prog's for your vehicle
I paid $670 plus Synth eng (10ltr), Transm (20ltr) oil for my 80k Book service.
and that was ALL fluids, brake steering, Hubs diffs. the works.
Not the tappets.
Isuzu wanted $1360+ $270 for tappets.
Then another $850 for master Cyl and new shoes/pistons etc on rear.
Should be fine for a while now.
Second fuel filter is something we ALL should have with Australian fuel.
Not the cleanest fuel on worlds market.
Just one of those from Supercheap will do the job. $60ish, in line.
If an Auto, they should have done a Transm "flush" plus filter.
NOT a service for it.
Service only changes around 1\3rd of fluid.
A good time to add an extra transm cooler in line too.

Dmax Dealers vary wildly in the prices they charge.
If you look at the DMax web page at capped pricing, the 40K and 80K major service is about $1200.
We had our 40K done at the Dealer in Batemans Bay, NSW. The Dealer service manager scoffed at the $1200 and said they never charge that much as they cant honestly justify it. It cost me $705.
Due for my 80K service in about 3K - will be phoning dealers to find out who will be the cheapest (they all provide the same service level although the dearer ones might have better coffee and a bigger TV screen in their waiting area lol
