I am interested in any feedback regarding the webasto diesel hotplate, as we are considering getting one for a new off road van we hope to purchase next year. Curious if there is any odour outside van and where the best exhaust point might be.

We avoided the purchase of a diesel hot plate because I have a real aversion to things with flames. Just a suggestion, we bought an induction cooktop from ecopot, bit expensive and runs off 240V mains. The one we got has variable wattages as well as temperature (has a "W" button bottom right) I find at 1000 watts the machine cooks well, runs OK from our inverter and even better at a caravan park.
Just something for you to consider, this beast is around $300 but well worth it. If interested goggle ecopot and take a look.
Enjoy the forum. EDIT: Pic is the new induction cooker, cheap at $200.. NOTE: you nbeed special cookware for these, available at Woolworths at a reasonable price (around $20 each saucepan.)

Thanks Phil, do you find they take long to heat up. I am just wondering as we are keen to free camp a bit and at 1000 w I think it will draw about 4 amps, which is ok, but curious how long we would need to sustain the current draw. Also have you tried a wok on it as they often need a higher heat. Thanks again for your post, given us something fresh to consider. Cheers, Ross

Hi Ross, To answer your question. We have a van with a Webasto cook top. Can't fault it. It does take a while to heat up, but we were told that before we bought the van. (Just need to attend to a couple of things before you put the bacon on!) I think that any diesel appliance, whether it be a heater, cooktop or HWS (all three in our van) do have a bit of a diesel smell when you fire them up but nothing for anyone to be concerned about. The exhaust for the cooktop on our van is just before the front wheel on the off (drivers) side. If you want to stay for extended periods in the bush it is an ideal solution. They use very little diesel, as do the heaters and HWS's, so I say, go for it. We cook a lot outside and, at the moment it is hot in Nth West Queensland so we're not using it much! The induction cooktop might be an answer if you are spending lots of time with 240v power, but it will knock your power about if you are relying on solar. Of course the generator is an option if you are in a friendly campsite. Let us know what you decide. Cheers, Bob

Was interested in all diesel down the track so LPG aint an issue... Like anything,the time lag thing, ya get used to it, bacon and eggs would be the most mine would see,out side with the charcoal thank you very much...!!!
One of those gas canister hot plate things for a quick coffee, tea might be the go for a quickie,but I'm sust thinkin out loud...

Just remember, if you are going to put a full annex on the van you can not have your fridge, water heater or diesel cooker exhausts exiting into the annex.

Welcome to the gang Ross_N_Pam, enjoy here and out in the playground.
I just use my gas stove inside van, a small butane cooker outside and my WeberQ. All works for me but every body has different ways and ideas.

It depends on the temperature you set. At low temps in cycles off and on, on high temps its on more than off.

Just remember, if you are going to put a full annex on the van you can not have your fridge, water heater or diesel cooker exhausts exiting into the annex.
