I was fortunate enough to be camped alongside a very interesting guy ,what got my attention was all the clever mods he had made up for his van and tug well thought out pieces of engineering,but when he started talking diesil engines the guy really got my attention ,first he adds I think 2mls of diesil oil per ltr to his fuel mix,I think it was to replace sulphur That was removed from the mix apparently that gives a very good performance boost,the second thing was to fit a snorkel to your tug ,the engine then breathes fresh air from outside the vehicle that makes a lot of sense to me,I wish I could remember the air filter he had on the snorkel that brand was a must have piece of kit.
any feed back from people that know what there talking about, could be of benefit to others on the forum..

Oil to Diesel.....
std 2 stroke engine oil NOT Synthetic nOR Marine.
Can't offhand remember vilume per 8oltr tank.
I have a litle oil bottle the right size. I keep full in tray.
Just for tank top ups.
Snorkel to any engine gives cleaner, Normally a liitle cooler, air to box.
Any mesh filter over top will do.
Foam filters normally tend to choke.

Fitting a snorkel is a no brainer. Should be standard.
Additives have been debated for so long on many forums with lots of data being quoted.From what I have been able to interpret, the main advantage for any additive is to the company selling it.

200:1 ratio two stroke oil, Gulf Western is usually the cheapest but don't use outboard as this does not mix with diesel. Helps lubricate the injector pump and quieten the diesel rattle. I have a K&N pod style filter in a custom air box via a snorkle. I check the air filter every oil change at 5000k.
I have a graduated bottle of the twostroke oil in the back and put it in each fill, I never let the tank get below a quarter full.
There is heaps on the web about the twostroke, just google twostroke oil in a diesel engine. Happy reading and form your own conclusion, it works for me in my turboed 6.5 litre chev diesel.

I thought fuel companies such as Caltex put additives in their diesel, votex diesel, anyway or is that just cleaners or bull?

Had my injector pump rebuilt by a local diesel service company a few months back and was advised to stop using fuel adatives and definitely no oil mix of any kind.
His reasoning was most additive products do more damage to seals and internal parts than the good they advertise.
This guy only does injector pumps and has been at them for over 30 years and goes on to say using oil whether 2 stroke or mineral engine oil is the reason the pump shafts wear.
I don't know anything about injector pumps and workings but if this guy has been in the game for so long I bet he does.
As for my snorkel I use a Uni-filter cover, easily washed and re-oiled for use and it stops a lot of bugs and a greater amount of dust getting to the K&N main filter.

A heads up on the 2 stroke from me too. I have been using it for just over 160000 k now ...and injector pump is still going fine....having to be rebuilt at 100000 k because the injector head and spindle had worn enough to cause hard starting when hot. My Datto is a 1997 model ...so it didn't go very long when sulphur was dropped from diesel ...as a worn IP at 100000K was plain wrong. It went in to get injectors done recently...and the techie was quite astonished at how clean they were inside....no parts replaced...just had cracking pressures set. he reckoned I must be using Chemtech all the time ....until I mentioned the 2 stroke. Truck now has 260000k on it and still no noticeable diesel rattle after reaching operation temp...so good ole lawn mower/whipper snipper oil does it for my old girl anyhow.

I recently had no choice but to use BP Ultimate diesel because the usual BP diesel wasn't available.
The fuel consumption went from 12.8 l/100 to 15.3l/100 straight away...which is only .5 of a litre less than it uses towing our van !!!
All the hype about clean your tank in 2 fills is a crock of s**t IMO.
And as for lubricity...well it is probably made for common rail diesels ....and they need very little lubrication...so I was glad I use 2 stroke in my fuel.

What additives ? Most additives that clean ., Are not very seal friendly ., which has nothing to do with adding some 2 stroke . The main part is not to add too much . Some think 2000 to 1 is good so 500 to 1 must be much much better ! Yes have an older style diesel too . I wouldn't use it on latter model highly stressed single rail on short trips Atleast. I run s water / ethanol mix also as my GM isn't intercooled . Only comes on when pulling hard on hills . Used 3 lites over 30,000 klrs . 6 litres of 2 stroke oil ., added 400ml to every second tank or so .. Though often they were top up fills ? I'm sure it runs much better now after trip around 3/4 Aust . Penrith, Mt Gambier, Perth, Broom, Darwin, down centre to Vict Harbour then home . Water injection keeps cylinders etc super clean . 2 stroke softens old carbon also .

So what is the difference between Mineral Oils and Diesel Fuel which is produced from Refined Mineral Crude Oil. This Blaming the wear in Fuel Pumps from using Mineral Oils sounds a Bit Sus to me. I've been using either Auto Trans Fluid or 2 Stroke oil whichever is the Cheapest at the time for the last 20 years in two different vehicles without a problem.
I even advised an Older couple with a Failed Injection Pump (Leaking Badly) on an Earlier model Transit van 11 years ago to try the ATF in the Diesel fuel. When again catching up with them 5 yrs later he told me that the Pump stopped leaking and gave them another years grace before trading in. It had already done over 200,000 kms as an Ex Postal Delivery van before they bought it.
When fitting the Doring Fuel Catalyst Unit the recommendation is to run ATF for approx 1 - 2000 kms until the unit was working to Full efficiency with a Petrol engine and Less with a diesel.
Auto Trans Fluid has a High Concentration of Zinc which is a Good Dry Lubricant and helps with Valve Seat and Guide Wear Factors.

Interesting that when I spoke to my mechanic about additives he did not recommend Chem Tech or 2 stroke, but suggested the use of ATF. Not using any of it as the old tug (80 series diesel) has not needed any engine work init's 410000 km so far.

It can help in older pumps as it gives more viscosity to diesel . As they wear out ..
