the power when towing our caravan its 1700 full loaded so well with in limit
Towing the caravan at xmas time to Pambula the car seamed to struggle only get to 60 klms up some hills
Plenty of other 3.0 vehicles flew past us
Wonder what to do sell it or
its got just over 200000 on the clock

Hi tony the first and basic things are air and fuel
How long since you put a new fuel filter on it, and if not long it's not inconceivable that you were unlucky enough to get some dirty fuel, solution is to fit a new fuel filter to it .
Second is air, is the air cleaner clean so the engine can get enough air and exhaust can it get rid of the air although with a 3 inch axhaust that shouldn't be a problem unless the muffler on it has collapsed inside unlikely but....

Yes,air and fuel are the basics certainly pay to check them.If there is no improvement remove the chip and try it. A dyno test and a remap of the computer may sort out the problem.Chips have been known to play up and if it is the problem the person from whom you purchased it should replace it.Diesel service people know much more and have the equipment cp dealer..

Yep as above .. Being turbo diesel I would be checking inlet pipes for leaks , including wastgate operation .. I assume you don't have a boost gauge ? Could try disconnecting battery to re boot ECU ? Btw good fuel supply is critical on modern engines ..

One question.
When was it last in a decent workshop for a service.
There are sooo many things guessing could cause more problems than you started with.
First thing. Isolate chip. (only 2 plugs) or maybe a zero pin.
If you do sell.
Look at a D-Max.
mine tows my Tandem 2 ton and don't know it on rear.
Down to Melb to collect. on way back with van,
used very little more diesel, (7.6ish down, 9\9.5ish back)
on the flat mainly. Newell. Leichardt. Central.
Those were the figures I got from tank top up to tank top up.
Not electronics.
Central QLD.
Chip. 3 in Stainless. Snorkel plus light foot.
Run near road speeds mostly.
Some parts of Leichardt impossible with any comfort. (80ish)
Rough as. With a rear leaf spring ute.

The only thing to do would be to have a good workshop or dealer have a look at it and give you an answer and a price ,perhaps ask up front roughly what they would charge for the inspection, and work from there,no one here can diagnose your problem for you I would thing but maybe Iam wrong...

Could imagine what a dealer would charge ? First get the ECU read for faults ? If auto ? Is it kicking or changing down ? Is it runing hot ? It could be going into limp mode ?

Is this a recent development or has it always been like this ?
Older models T/D Prados aren't exactly known as powerhouse tow vehicles.

Has it got a catalytic converter. They can block up. I should have said particulate filter.

Hi Tony,
We owned a 3.4 V6 petrol Parado for 15 years. Now she wasn't a diesel either. Back in August 2012 Towing our boat back from WA yet again, all up 1800kg fully loaded with all our camping gear.
Going up hills in Wagga Wagga NSW the B Doubles were over taking us up hill. We could only manage 40km up hill 90 -95km with the wind behind on the flats. Fuel went out the window so to speak.
We went in search of a new tug, for both work and long term retirement, towing of both the boat and as not on the agenda at that time a caravan.
We ended up going for a GX TTD 200 Landcruiser. Best decision we ever made.
What ever you do, think long term, if you are going to do a lot of towing in retirement.
PS: We had clocked up 445,000km on her. Towing she did not like.
