Best advice on which road to climb the big hills of the Snowy Mnts

Hi all Rob Here, i wish to glean some experienced info on which road/Hwy to climb the Snowy.
Currently traveling Ring 1 at Narooma now looking at Eden in May then hanging right onto the Snowy Hwy (looks twisty) or onto the Monaro Hwy heading towards Gundagai.

My preference would be the Monaro. While in Gundagai area go to Jugiong Great Camp at showground - Donation Box - Long Track Pantry opposite www.longtrackpantry.com.au/ Country Food Store extraordinaire.
Take note at the Police memorial beside the ablution block - very poignant - Praises Police not Bushrangers.

Hi Rob,I live in Cooma, the heart of the Snowy Mountains. I have negotiated those hill climbs many times, either with a horse float loaded with two nags or my heavy semi-off road caravan which I tow with my Nissan Navara 3 litre diesel and the smaller 22D engine. If you are traveling from Eden to Gundagai the shortest route is over and down these mountains. Eden - Bega (via Bega bypass) - Bemboka - Brown Mountain (6-8 km steep and twisty, I do it in second gear/40km/h/close to 3th revs all the way - Nimmitabel - Cooma (at roundabout left direction Jindabyne) - 6 km out of Cooma swing a right to Adaminaby (some longish hill climbs but not steep) - after about 10 ks you enter Kosciuszko NP where the climb begins. Again, I done it regularly to camp up there; road has a number of bends but nothing to get stuck on. Trucks (logging/wooliies and such) crawl up and down regularly as well as heaps of caravans. Trust me, it's quite OK to travel that route. Anyyhow, you get to the top at the former Gold Mining town of Kiandra. Make sure you stop and have a look around. The Snowy Mountains Hwy then levels out and you can cruise along and enjoy the beautiful landscape, as well as the brumbies (wild horses) often grazing close to the road. Eventually the road leads downhill to Talbingo. Steep and twisty for 6 ks - make sure your brakes are in top working order! After a 40 km drive along Blowering Dam (free campsites) Tumut next, then Adelong and off you are to Gundagai on the Hume Hwy. You will have to turn slightly north-west though to get to Gundagai. By the way: the Snowy Mountains Hwy starts at Bega and finishes in Tumut.
The other route to Gundagai is up to Cooma, then Canberra - Murrumbateman -Yass - Gundagai, all the way along boring Hways.

Thanks Quirky, info much appreciated we have travelled the Manaro to Dalgety now have moved on to Gooloogong , Yass, Parkes , Dubbo, and beyond in the next pursuing weeks keeping to the west to QLD. Thanks for the contact will be back again and will look you up.

Hi Robero, glad you found a way around the Snowies and roll, roll to warmer climates. I will be leaving this Saturday; out west, like you Yass, Cowra, Dubbo and beyond. Perhaps we roll into eachother along the road... Save caravaning!
