I've used GARMIN for over 25yrs. Marine and road.
NEVER had a bad one.
we running 4 at present. 2 x cars. 2 x boats.

Bit like PC software . I have Tom Tom . But I'm used to their software . How they operate . Has never failed ! Although at times as with other GPS's they ask you to turn left through fields at times . I find just keep driving and you come right .lol

I have always used Garmin car and bike and always will , just because like A.K say its what you get used to .
I use Camps 8 Book and have all the Camps 8 numbers in the Garmin , I find that very useful
Don't know if that can be done with Tom Tom .

Strange thing is we use the iPhone / IPad as well .Wikicamps etc No shortage of back seat drivers !! Lol

I have had both Garmin and tom tom over the years,there only a tool and can put you on the wrong track so as to speak,what I do is on the tom tom when loading it traces a line between the the start and finish points I check that on a mud map just to make sure it's not doing anything silly,sometimes they will ask you turn off main highways onto secondary roads or country roads I tend to ignore this and it sorts itself out.
ninenty percent of the time it's perfect but don't trust it completely...
to answer your question snap I find the tom tom a good unit ,the Garmin was as well no matter what you choose there all similar ,just with the new ones the tec and the maps will be right up to date.

Be careful having settings on shortest route . We went through a rocky section in US in a car should NEVER have to go ! Lol Even a hire car !!

I have the Apple Car Play and equivalent Android system built in so I just plug an iPhone or an android device and use the phone's GPS via the car's 7" screen. I would still much prefer to have had a proper built in Sat Nav and sound system rather than relying on these external devices but I guess that time and technology moves on. I take my old Navman as a backup and it still works fine probably could do with a map update though as it's around 10 years old.

Yes the MAIN roads haven't changed .. OK when there's new roads you go through paddocks !! Lol But keep going it come's right ! Yes on dash where you can read while driving with decent sound . Our is through stereo.. So you hear and see where and when to turn in ardvance..

The ALL use Tom Tom.
99% of everything man made (and more) will be avail for details. Opinions and
usefulness on there.
Even planets and Stars in the sky nowadays.

Used TT for last 17 years, currently I have the 6100 with big screen and lifetime free updates - a really great device. I do map updates on the computer and discovered too late that my recently acquired Windows 10 doesn't support TT software, so now have to revert to wife's laptop as hers is still Windows 8. Just saying it's worth looking into the background support stuff, the buying decision is about more than just the device itself. Otherwise TT are great, don't think there are any *bad* models. Sorry I can't comment on the via 280 specifically.

There are reviews by the 100 on line just type in tom-tom 280 reviews and up they will come.
I have used tom-tom for the past 10-12 years and found them easy to use and quite reliable, I have also used mine touring in Europe as well as outback Australia and will definitely stick with tom-tom
