I am thinking of doing a weekender to Cooktown from Mareeba and I am looking at going along the Bloomfield from Cape Tribulation to the Lions Den. Has anyone been along there in the last couple of weeks, I would like to know the road condition and the depth of creeks as I don't have a snorkel fitted yet, driving a D-Max.

Just out of curiosity, I google, Bloomfield Track /Coastal Road and a sight come up belonging to Douglas Shire explaining about the drive. This webb site could be of interest to you
Personally I have done this drive over a couple of years, both times there appeared very little changers except for the new bridge at the Bloomfield Crossing and some tar up near the Lions Den Hotel.
Be warned of localized rain making the creek crossing on the road to Bloomfield River a risk.

Thanks Radar. Have checked out the website and I may have to stick to the highway until I have a suspension lift and a snorkel fitted.
Ken, If the road is open then your vehicle will be able negotiate the track. If it is not open then there will be signs preventing you from driving up. As you are from Mareeba you will still have a good days outing even if you find a road closed sign.
It is best not to be towing no matter how geed the track is, some do tow along it but they are the ones who don't like taking advice, they have the urge to prove others wrong.

There is no need for a suspension lift or a snorkel for that road (unless you are one of those who bypasses closed road signs.)

Greybeard55, I just checked with the Douglas Shire Council and the road from Mossman to Cooktown is ok, providing you are not towing a trailer or van. It is a great part of the North to visit. A couple of the creek crossings are tidal, as well if there has been rain up on the mountains it can come down stream quickly, and usually drains quickly. You can come down the Bloomfield track and return to Mareeba via Julatten. if you are interested in birds there is a bird hide near the Mt. Molloy end.

I will be towing but not a Van , a camper trailer as we have just got the camper and want to do a couple of short trips and weekends away so we can figure out all the things we will want to have with us in the way of cooking ingredients and equipment etc.. We intend to do a 6month lap next year and have a few things we need to know to set up to our liking.

We did the Bloomfield from Cairns as far as Wujil Wujil a few weeks ago. It was the only wet day in North Queensland for weeks. The road was slippery, but our Nissan patrol handled it well, however we did come across a Rav4 towing a camper trailer who had slid off the road about 10k south of Wujul Wujil. (He had forgotten to use his 4WD facility) We helped him up the hill, and continued on our way. On arrival at WW, we were advised the road was now too wet, so had to return to Cairns the long way around.
There is one "major" creek crossing, about thigh height if you walk it first.
We had checked previously/recently, and advised not suitable for our 3.5t caravan. The Bloomfield Track non bitumen portion is now only about 30k, from Daintree to Wujil Wukil, some uphill portions are now bitumen. The road from Wujil Wujil to Cooktown is bitumen all the way. The crossing on the Bloomfield River at Wujil Wujil is now a major bridge. You don't have to worry about wet water crossings there.
Agree with PeterD, no need for major modifications to your 4wd to do this drive.
