Going to Tas in August and want to drive up to Ben Lomond, I believe you must carry snow chains during August and September. My question as I have never driven on snow do you fit chains to 2 or 4 wheels on a 4wd ( Nissan Patrol GU running cooper LT 265 75r16 ST Maxx) and 2nd question what do you think re hire versus buy? Auto barn Launceston hire for $40 day and sell a pair for $190.

I went to see mum for her 90'th in UK. near 15\17 yrs ago.
After living here for 30 or so yrs.
Hired a car to NIP across to Liverpool and see Rellies.
From East Coast.
Yea.
December. thick frost and Ice on roads. with some snow.
Drove hire car. 10 miles. Said a prayer. and crept back to mums.
Next time it moves was when neighbour drove in back to Airport for me.
And to think I used to drive trucks over there for a living.

The owners handbook should state what axles to fit snow chains. For just the one visit, I'd hire. Practise fitting them before you venture out in snow/ice for the first time.

Lay them out. Drive over them and clip 'em up.
Simple after first coupla goes.
Just a miniature excavator\Dozer track re'lay.

Not sure if you are going to take a caravan up "Jacobs Ladder" to Ben lomond !!
If you are i seriously think you should take a drive up before trying with a caravan.

They say you must carry snow chains, doesn't say you must fit them.
That road is cleared regularly so it'd be highly unlikely you'd need to fit them.
the biggest obstacle you'll have is avoiding all the little cars with inexperienceddrivers that slip of the road or pull up in the middle of the road to take selfies.
I grew up in the Snowies and the only time I've fitted chains was when the bull bar was pushing snow on an unmaintained road. (That was in a Prado with same tyres you're wearing).
