Recently some one suggested I should drive in S4 or S5.

We tow in sports mode. S4 or s5 depends on terrain.
We tow with a TTD 200 Series Cruiser.
Ive read on one of the forums people get their tranmission temp warning on after tough toeing when in drive.
Towing in sports, the tranny will stay that little longer in the top selected gears before a down change, keeping the temp down and also fuel usage.
Even across the nullabor sometimes S5 was always chandin down so we stuck with S4. Didnt notice any difference in fuel usage.
But then dont make a habbit of it.
Hope this helps. We tow 2.7tonne van.
Kezngaz.

Sport mode usually locks out top gear ? The ECU changes trans to lower gear earlier in rev range .Possibly STAY in lower gear longer ? Why it's a sports mode !! All depends on load , wind etc . A tail wind on Nullarbor is great !!

Yea we found thats s5 on a slow incline would change down to 4.
So to stop the engine revving out for the change we just kept it in S4.

Ah well.
Some of us don't have that problem..
4 spd.
I tow in 4th normally.
On inclines. wind etc. (Have Converter lock up installed.)
Just drop into 3rd.
and lock up stops it hunting.
Less\same throttle. less speed. similar consumption. lower temp's.
Plus plus.
Happy ute and happy missus.
Why does it do that all the time. ??? (hunt)

Keep in mind with a turbo engine . Under load even at low rpm the turbo is working itx guts out to equal the pressures between exhaust and inlet pressures! Even though at 1600 rpm it seems fine . The auto, turbine ( exhaust side of turbo) gets very hot .. Plus the auto's fluid is not circulating too much to cool .In that condition . I would say latter model light trucks may have better ecu control software these days ? Although most effert is on economy .

That's why you preferably drop the cog. RAISE the rev's. Less load. more air\fluid flow. And the reason a lot have Transm coolers added. and Intercooler fans fitted with manual sw in cab.
Easier with front mount though.
Snorkel helps too.
I've seen one of those with fan installed inside head too.
Boosted airflow. Not too sure about that?.
