Good article aussie paul - personally I used the cheapest brand always when on special as long as it's the correct API rating. Having 7 kids gives you that kind of reasoning.

Coming from a farming family of 6 kids and having 4 of our own, that has been my logic. Others would say "tight arse" and yes, proud to be when I had to be.

Good article AP. Api as mentioned is most important together with grade or viscosity to suit your temperature and application. Otherwise ..How long is a piece of string?

I've never cared about the brand as long as it had the right specifications. However with the Fiat that I have you use their expensive made in Italy oil or your warranty is void. That said I haven't had to add any in the last 2 years but I have a tear in my eye when it has it's annual service

Basically ALL oils that meet your spec's .
WILL do the job.
It's just that the better the oil above that. will do a better job.
For longer. over a wider temp range.
I. and most Construction\truck\machinery users.
Used Shell ROTELLA for over 40 yrs myself.
BEST single grade 30 on the Heavy duty market. in a lot of country's.
Mate was (retired) senior oil tech in a Mobil Refinery for yrs.
I used to send him a ltr of any oil I went to.
For an evaluation.
Same answer. EVERY time.
"It'll do the job".
I sent him Castrol Professional Magnatec Full Prof.
he said. Use that one.
I use that one for last 10 yrs or more.
20 ltr drums from Depot. Around $165\180 per drum.
As long as YOU happy with the oil YOU use. Don't worry about it.
But he did say yrs ago.
Valvolene is good for bushes. Never another word about it.

I could be repeating my self, but.
It isn't all that critical. Mainly hype to sell more expensive oils. Provided the average ambient temperature is within the guide the oil is OK to use. Just check your manual.

BUT Full Synthetics. DO do a better job in a heavy load bearing towing application.
Proven. with strip down tests.
Driving round fine. Any good oils.
But for heavy diesels. Single grade. Shell Rotella.
or Rimula.

Probably the better on the market for old school donk's.
Last job before retirement. Smaller machines.
Kobelko 160ton Excavators. Boss had 8. among another 3 ship loads.
we ran 24\7 with 2 x 1\2 hr service every 24hrs. end of shifts, (oil levels basically)
100 hr drops. religiously.
For 4 yrs continously.
Out of service. full strip down. Rebuild. back in for another 4 yrs .
Mine was over 15 yrs When I retired.
She's just blown one of the Rotary 6 Hydraulic pumps that drove muck pole.
2 x Cat 840 hp ran her. Reliable as.
She was sent in for early strip and semi retirement.
I did too then. 10\12\'94
He was phasing them out after working in N.Guinea most of their lives.
Everything ran on Shell oils. single grade.
He had 3 ships. One a small tanker.
Carrying his oils and diesels from Malaysia or Singapore refinery's.
Cheaper.

Well there you go.
I have been using Penrite HPR30 in my 1995 GQ 4.2 EFI petrol Patrol for 20 years & 260,000km. Change every 10'000Km or these days on a 12m basis because of lack of KMs travelled.
When I got it my Mechanic suggested Penrite, so we changed all the oils with the Penrite straight away & stayed with it ever after.
The question is what will I do on the next change? Got 1/2 a can left from the last change & 5L of HPR30 costs around $40 ..... takes about 8L.

That's easy - just use the 7.5l you have....oil level will not be full but no problems as long as it's above low.
That's unless you burn oil!
