Hi fellow members. Tomorrow i pick up my 2013 hilux SR5 Diesel. My mechanic told me to put a catch can on it but lookung on ebay i see they range in price from $100 to $400. As my vehicle will only be a show pony i was wondering which Can the forum felt was the best and also which fuel filter

Just make sure it's not vented to atmosphere . Or it'll be defected . Just run hose to inlet up stream from air cleaner . To vent if it has one ?

I have a had HPD Catch Can fitted to my Dmax for a couple of years now , they are probably one of the more expensive ones that doesn't mean it's the best , I chose the HPD simply because it came with a bracket a couple of hoses ect and was a simple bolt in fit
Last time I emptied it there was 165mm of oil collected in 27k , I removed the outlet hose just to have a look , it was dry so I guess from that it's doing the job .
Catch Cans are just fitted in line , the outlet and inlet still exit and return to the same place as the original system .
A mate has just fitted one to his new HiLux .
I have a 30 micron Flash Lube prefilter fitted under the tray near the fuel filler , my Dmax is a Space Cab , I have room behind the cab for a filter on the left and a second battery on the right .

I did it the illegal way. That works too.
Blank off the rocker line inlet to Airbox. AT Airbox inlet.
New Outlet pipe from rocker cover down to Chassis rail.(1in tubing). Bottom end of it, clamped to a Catch can at inlet Inlet. Drain screw at bottom of. With a screened filter at top to release fumes.
It Bypasses ALL the crap from rocker to intake. Feeding straight from rocker cover to can.
Then Drained off manually, while being vented to air, So.
No Oil and residue. NO build up of carbon etc possible in EGR system\Intake etc. Much cleaner engine intake\exh, piping.

Shadow,
My second hand Patrol came with a catch can already fitted. It is quite basic with a fine metal filter inside a plastic can connected to a couple of HD hoses but it seems to catch some oily vapour. However, in 30,000kms, I only find a few mms of oil in the bottom (gave up checking it at normal service intervals). Mine connects to the blow-off fitting at the rear of the rocker cover & exits into the air feed between the air filter & the turbo.
I had a quick look on eBay - prices there vary from $70 to the end of the earth!
For those who may say it is a waste, one day it could save an expensive repair (cheap insurance?).

Just a few drops from the drain line under the engine I know it's connected correctly mechanical stuffs my hobby so I was surprised at the result ,in one of my earlier posts you will find a picture the inlet manifold I pulled off the car ,it was not as dirty as I expected ,but when I put it back on it was like new, makes me wonder why I bothered doing the job in the first place probably reading too much crap about this being a problem on the Internet forums ,no doubt it's been a problem for some, but it was a waste of my time....

Warran how much oil did ya catch , if ya filled the CC in 10K , that can mean ya motor has heaps of blow by , rings not sealing , motor stuffed , or the oil you are using is crap .
My HPD Can seem to be on par with what others are reporting with their Isuzu's
catch ya Jacko .

G`day,
Another vote for HPD, it is physically smaller than Provent. Made from alloy. Built in dip stick. Supplied with vehicle specific bracket and hose. I collect about 55ml per 10000km in my Colorado.
Cheers,

If you have a can fitted in the loop. and you getting no residual in bottom of can.
It's probably staying suspended in mist and going back through egr to donk.
That's why I have the one way unit.
One line in. Mesh\foam filter on top for mist and gas release.
Temp change drops oil into base of. And I drain through tap.
Mine goes NOWHERE near the airbox. That's blanked. Clean air only there through snorkel.
LEGAL??? Shrug. Who knows . For a looong time I just left it hanging under engine like they have for decades and more. BUT. It was leaving a messy OIL drip patch on concrete. Smack smack. OK love. It's done.
2010 veh and a good drip patch forming. SO yes. they do drain oil.
Just keep it away from your intake and turbo OK.

For the dumnies . A catch can also keeps oil in crankcase with baffles etc to prevent oil or suspended mist going into inlet manifold . It has NOTHING to do with EGR that's the exhaust side side of system . I make oil seperaters /catch cans for race / turbo engines . Any oil in engine promotes detonation on petrol engines. Often catch cans are designed to let oil drain back to crankcase also . A one way valve can work.. But make very sure the other breather is well vented to inlet . Or it WILL build too much crankcase pressure ! Blowing oil seals ..

As far as I know none of the Catch Cans available have a drain back to the crank case , well not the ones I have checkout and I did look at a few before I got my HPD , some have a drain valve you open to empty the Can , I guess you could plumb that back to the crank case if you wanted .
A Catch Can on modern Diesel engines that we are talking about here , simply go in the existing line nothing to do with he EGR valve .

In most cases if the PVC can be made to route higher the oil goes back into engine . The crankcase can and should be under vacuum which draws condensation and other contaminants out of engine . Making for far cleaner oil in the long run . Especially on engines doing short trips where engines oil doesn't get too warm . Yes it depends where can is fitted ?? Some times just adding an extension increasing the height of hose above rocker cover is enough ?? To keep engine apparence looking untouched ..
Interesting question.
Great question, and I am looking forward to the answers too.
