Hi Bob
If for any reason you are not successful in repairing the leak, then go to a mechanic
If it leaks when filling the tank, (with the vehicle on flat ground), then it will certainly be leaking when going up or down, a steep hill
Eventually the leaking diesel under the chassis, may be blown onto the exhaust, by the generated wind while travelling, this could eventually result in a fire
Also leaking diesel has been known to destroy the bitumen
Hope that this info is useful to you

Hi
Bad news and a real fire risk etc.
My suggestion would be to look for a breather hose that has come off a fitting on top of the tank. Perhaps look in the hatch mentioned or you can get your head in there or even a mirror and a light. ( NOT A MATCH ) If not get a mechanic or similar to find it. Possibly just to reconnect it. Or just possibly someone has drilled a hole in the tank top when fitting something. The dust will stick to the diesel spilt so you will see the trail easily I think.
good luck Jaahn

Tony, Diesel or petrol leaking onto a hot exhaust will not combust unless a spark is introduced into the mix.

Thanks for that info, Patrol03
I learned something new today
But... I stick with my original answer, of leaking diesel could cause a fire, just to be on the safe side
It was something they drummed into me as a 16 year old, in the English coalmines, learning about underground diesel locomotives

Absolutely correct. Years ago we were traveling down the Bruce Hwy doing 100kph behind a scrap metal truck. A piece of metal dropped onto the road in front of us & bounced up underneath our car.
It punctured our fuel tank & about 30 ltrs of fuel came our of the rear in a cloud of vapor. It also ripped our exhaust system out. Luckily there was no BOOM!
You need to see a mechanic, soon.
