Paul, I'm a Patrol (diesel) convert I used to have Pajero's but changed to Patrols in 98 after they corrected weak front diff. I like the patrol because of all the whizz-bang traction control gear as standard, and it is very comfortable, easy access (dicky leg). I've had two now this 2013 one now will most probably be the last unless we win Lotto. If money wasn't a worry I would go for a 70 series Toyota - www.toyota.com.au/landcruiser-70/range But that's the only Toyota I would have. The 100 series cruisers are pretty reliable if going second hand.

Paul, Looking at Redbook your vehicle www.redbook.com.au/cars/research/used/details/2010-mitsubishi-pajero-glx-nt-manual-4x4-my10/SPOT-ITM-258709 Doesn't give much room if you only spend $10K . The 24ft Jayco Sterling with batteries, solar and Genset is going to limit your choice - Personally, I believe your rig should be towed with a full ladder chassis vehicle - I don't know enough about the Ütes to consider a recommendation, particularly if Auto transmission is a must do.

Hi Paul...If you refer to the Weight Situation thread,you will see my thoughts there.All my suggestions were
based on you not having to spend much on changeover,but if you have $10k to add to the sale price of the
Pajero,you have far more choices.The Land Rovers look OK,but you may be able to get an older 4.2 litre
Patrol....as my note said,if you want Auto,DO NOT look at a 3 litre Patrol,as they can tow only 2500kg.

Suppose it can be read lots of ways, I tow with a range rover, p38 and love it but the disco get rave reviews as the best tow vehicle and are in the price range. Cant understand why people would buy a vehicle that are designed (poorly) as a work vehicle when they are touring. Then spend a couple of thousand putting a canapy on them to turn them into a wanta be station wagon . I know, each to there own but when people ask questions I will if I desire, state my thoughts. Best of luck in persuit of your vehicle of choice

Hi Paul, I do not know what situation is concerning the weight you tow or your financial situation but remember two basic things when towing...you can't beat cubic capacity or brake horsepower. Remember many of the tow vehicles towing large caravans on the road are under powered. Economy is good to have but comfort and safety on the open road is paramount.Bear this in mind when you make your personal choice . Because a particular vehicle is advertised as having a particular towing capacity and a high lowball weight does not make it suitable for all situations.

Aussie Paul, Yobarr has mentioned the 4.2L Patrol but I saw that you wanted an auto. Unless the car has been modified, the 4.2L Patrols are manual only.
Like many others in this forum, I'm on my second 4.2 & my third Patrol in 33 years - the first was the 3.3L diesel. All were bought 2nd (or more) hand.
I have two friends with 100 Series TLCs. They can be expensive to buy & one friend was shocked that his 2005 model Cruiser had a lot of rust in it - when he changed the windscreen.
Telstra changed to Patrols during the reign of the 80 Series TLC because of two reasons - reliability & cost. Broken transmissions in isolated areas were not nice. From what I've heard the 100 Series was improved.
There are many vehicles out there to consider, I hope you find a good vehicle.

Absolutely some great points and my thoughts are comfort as well.
I know that the LC 200 series maybe out of your specifications and requirements and this vehicle is not what you originally specified in your enquiring post, however, i have one and it is the only vehicle that I have ever owned, ever, that I can step out of in three or four hours of driving and actually walk without limping, staggering, and favouring one leg or the other until I regain composure.
IMO this goes a long way to balancing the cost of the vehicle.
Paul I am not saying that you wont gain this advantage from other makes of vehicles but to me, it makes an enormous difference in my comfort on the drive.

Paul, on the other tread you say. "The van weight whilst connected to Pajero with WDH fitted was 2700kg, the car was 2900kg, and the ball weight was 320kg."
I have a three year old Triton, 3t towing limit and 300kg on the ball, so they are out for you.

just throwing it out there, but any reason that change over money couldn't be thrown at the pajero for a suspension gvm upgrade? I'm not sure if there is something that will get you over the 300kg ball weight but they come pretty close from initial searching.

It is beginning to look like a Pajero suspension upgrade might be the go. If I can get the van more balanced and not have to carry genset or fuel in the tug then Pajero still workable. Probably the cheapest and the "devil you know" scenario.

Paul, you have a similar length/weight of van to what we own, the bigger the van, the more (she) you will fit into it, I'm towing with a BT50, and am sweating over the weights, but as far as I am concerned, the only important figure, is the "combined mass" allowance of the tow vehicle, if you are over that then you are stuffed. I don't recall reading the figures of the Pajero. Your tug for safety sakes needs to be heavier than the van, by what percentage I don't know, I say that because you say "and not have to carry the genset or fuel in the tug", which possibly means you are transferring these to the van. I have not brought a generator, WDH, or Bull bars, as I need to keep the weight down. When I looked at having an up-grade to the BT50 suspension, I was told at the time that the CVM could not be changed. I have since learnt, on this forum it can be but I suspect at an enormous expense. Good luck with your exercise, but tread carefully.
Just another thing I thought of, and that is, I was told, any mods done on the suspension, need to be nationally certified, not just state certified, unless of course you don't intend traveling inter-state.
