I have been using a Garmin nuvi 2797 and found it good however it needed an update done. Free Lifetime Updates came with the purchase. It all worked great on my Toshiba Satalite Laptop running Windows 7 Office and updated through Garmin Express. I had to replace my laptop about 2 years ago and have not been able to do updates the same way since.
The new Laptop is a HP Spectre running Windows 10 home and it doesn't see the Garmin when I connect via a Garmin data cable that came with it and worked on the Toshiba. I have tried another cable as it keeps saying to do along with a different USB port but still no see. I have tried finding any settings I have missed but no luck.
SO,
With that in mind I remembered when I got the Colorado the young sales guy was very proud of the 'My Link' advantages and showed me the music and radio features along with a navigation system. I never used any of them. You get an App on your phone called BRINGO for the navigation stuff and connect through that to the cars MY Link screen. I did all that and seems to work OK but can't get the voice to work even though I have clicked that to be on through My Link. It's no big deal but the annoying voice saves looking at the screen in the middle of the dash console. Oh! My data on the phone doesn't seem to use much while using Bringo so that's good.
Two qestions,
1. Does anyone know why the Garmin would stop working on the new Laptop?
2. Does anyone know about Bringo and why the voice wouldn't be working?
Keep Safe out there everyone.
Edit....Maybe I should go to the local primary school and ask the kids, they would probably know

I had a Nuvi and had a few problems updating Free Lifetime Maps.
It's a bit like phoning the IT guy at work who's first question is ..................Is it Plugged in and switched on?
I found that for some reason logging in the computer went to the MYGarmin USA site. Had to make sure it was Garmin Australia.
Just a thought.

Doug my only suggestion is if you haven't already, install the Garmin Express software from the Garmin site.

Doug, perhaps you need the Garmin driver, for your new Windows 10 laptop
They should be on the Garmin website, under the support section, of your model Garmin

Remember lifetime updates are usually only for what the manufacturers deem the life of the product to be, this sort of item is probably 3 to 4 years

Well I suppose that I'm lucky with 7 years and just did an update last night. I just checked on Google and got this....
www.garmin.com/en-AU/legal/lmdisclaimer A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more.
So it seems that Garmin are one of the few that recognises lifetime as just that, as long as your not tardy with updates.

Thanks for the input everyone.
I tried doing the suggestions but still no luck so maybe I was deemed a bit 'tardy'. Through no fault of mine though. I think I will just keep playing with BRINGO for now.
I like Google maps but find the phone screen too small and don't have a tablet.

Doug, I hate to say it but with IT technology these days your GPS is what you probably now need to replace. I am no expert but lets say 4 years is a long time in these things. I believe the experts do this so that you have to buy either new GPS or Update/replace computer to make them compatible. Only my opinion but these guys make billions. On another subject I had hoped to met you in Townsville this year as I missed you last year but now see you will not be there. Doing one last trip around AS next year so hopefully will catch you then before we go back home after 3 years full time travel.

Hi Col, sorry but just noticed your reply.
The Garmin has been put away.
Sorry also that I will not be in Townsville but as you have probably read I am helping friends out and that is also very important to me. Wonthaggi is just down the road from Townsville though
I will be in Townsville next year for sure as I will need the tropical grandkids fix by then. Oh all right and see my daughter
In the mean time I am getting to know my two grandsons south of Melbourne and more important them getting to know poppy
