Doing some maintenance on the FIL's Roadstar van. One of the wind-down legs has a snapped threaded rod. I am looking to source either a complete leg or a threaded rod to suit.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

I'm pretty sure most of the Bunning's, Mitre Ten places all sell threaded rod. Various diameters but not sure if the diameters would match.
Another thought.
What about those scissor lift jacks in some cars. Could one be adapted to replace the rod
Would they also be long enough to use in place of the broken rod .

The normal wind down legs use 5/8 acme thread. The ends where they fit through the top mounting bracket is machined down to 5/16 and threaded for a unc nut. This is where they usually break. Replacement from a caravan parts supplier is only with a complete unit. I have replaced all four threaded rods in our van after one broke with acme threaded rod but they require further machining and threading. If you go down this path I recommend you change the threaded end to 1/2 unf to make them more robust.

If you buy a threaded rod you may have trouble matching the thread to the thread in the bush. To avoid the mucking around finding the correct size rod and fitting it to the leg body and adapting one end to the winder, it would be easier to buy a new one at a caravan accesories place and fit it to the chassis. Just make sure it is the same size as the others. They are normally only screwed on.
I suspect that someone wound the leg down and then forgot to wind it up before winding the jockey wheel down. The reason I think this is because the threaded rod snapped cleanly in the middle.

When replacing the whole unit you may consider replacing the lot with swing down jacks. The portable stands at the top of the list are another option, they give better stability than either style of jacks.
