Hi, I have an MUX and am considering installing a diesel chip but have read both good and bad reports about chips and whether they void the warranty.

i recon the engineers that design these engines most likely know more about them than the average joe blow i know people are getting performance improvements with some chips but if it was really a viable way to make those improvements why would the manufacturers not do it them selves

Manufacturers are stuck with trying to make a product to suit everyones different needs. I am sure a remap/chip to do a particular job could be achieved with little detriment.

I just today read an article (well, I saw the headline) where an Engine Tuning company was fined something like $300,000 for tuning engines while altering or deleting anti pollution equipment.

Yes VW on Diesel engines . So many parameters. Mind you a faulty EGR is no better either !!

We have had a chip in our Merc Benz for 5 years. The performance increase is substantial, fuel consumption the same, oil consumption zero.

I am considering doing this on our Ranger. I spoke to a friend who used to sell and install the chips and he felt the flash tuning was a better option as it is more likely to be customised for your particular vehicle. The problem is that is can be over-written by the manufacturer if they ever updated your tune in a service. (probably not often done). Some tuners are offering to re-flash it if that ever happened for the life of the vehicle.
i am very surprised that many seem to advertise on their websites that they turn off EGR or other anti-pollution items like a DPF delete which is surely illegal. As for warranty, I believe any manufacturer will use any excuse they can to deny you a warranty claim, many people remove the chip when they take the vehicle to a dealer for a service or warranty visit.

Ouch, nasty Jaahn Someone will wear the fines when they finish developing the system to do drive by exhaust analysis, TheEPA were already working on it back in 1985 when I was part of the early emissions testing before unleaded fuel was introduced to replace leaded fuel.
Just like caravans over weigh bridges, it isn't if but when it will occur. I expect there has been quite a bit of pressure against this mass emission testing being rolled by the various vehicle manufacturers, they would have been caught cheating a lot earlier if it was out there already. The fact that the whole cheating thing has been exposed will aid the push to get such a system out there to save a future embarrassment regarding being so easily conned by clever manufacturers.
So, how lucky do you feel? A rad on an installer by the EPA will give them a list of vehicles they have retuned and they can drag them in for emission testing now, so not something far off in the future, just needs a govt that wants to crack down on polluters

Then again do we replace cat converters, O2 sensors etc as the klrs go up ? They usually up the boost and fine tune a little better . Most re-map the std ECU . Chilli chips are my fav .

Anything with a later model CPU and emission control computer will throw the vehicle into limp home if any of those things fail, so you either replace them or throw the vehicle away. Sort of like saying you won't replace the diesel particulate filter when it fails, you just don't get a choice other than the two already mentioned.
Up the boost increases the NOX, reduce the EGR valve operation increases the NOX, change the injection plus timing or duration increases the NOX. If any of these things could be done with increasing the NOX emission don't you think the vehicle manufacturer would have done it already? VW now make their torque and kW output claims when on over boost and show any performance looking stuff off road. You don't see any of them making the claims pulling a caravan up a hill or off the lights, except for the Dodge Ram, shear cubic inches wins that battle every time

I had a Unichip fitted to my BT50 2015 have been really happy with what it does, firstly it has an immobiliser mode vehicle will not rev over 1000 RPM then an economy mode, the Mazda code a tow mode then power mode. Fuel comsumption is a bit better but the best part is watching the revs not dropping pulling up a hill as long as it is not

Theres aftermarket companies fixing issues .mainly exhaust partial filter system . From my limited knowledge they change the fuel to rich - lean oscillating so it cleans partical filter . Set in one or non oscillating it sure passes Euro EPA tests . But not for long . This keeps engine clean over a longer term, actually better emissions . Ive worked with an ECU mate who gets vehicles passed through emissions in Penrith RTA . So hes no idiot . Trouble is plug in chips without tune is not going to work properly. Just lucky NSW has emission testing at reasonable charge . All my mates tests at RTA leave with way better emissions and run way better . I guess its like a home cooked meal compared to take away . ? They all have issues . This is hardly a FIX ! Bad news when its a big manufacturere . If its happening in mining trucks ? Its hapening to private trucks too !! https://youtu.be/pkuw64EslvY
