Hello all. New to the Grey Nomads, although weve been this way for 6 years. Were heading toward the Cape on an adventure. Were camping for 4 weeks, and hope the rains have subsided before we tackle the Cape. Has anyone been up there recently, as a current road condition advice would be useful. Were driving with two other crews, all experienced 4 bs. Cant seem to find much useful info on government site. Cheers for now. P as in PaDge.

The current condition appears to be that most of the roads are closed up there. See this interactive map. Have a play with it and click on the symbols for more info. Click the cog wheel at the top RH corner to see what the symbols mean.

Did the trip last year, July. Left the van at Cooktown and camped in the back of the D-Max. Had a great time.
Researching the trip I came a cross a web site www.cape-york-australia.com run by Katrin Humsten which I purchased and downloaded. It became my bible! Tons of information on road conditions, camp spots, alcohol restrictions, history etc. The beauty of the guide is that Katrin updates it regularly on line and emails you regularly.
I didn't do the Telegraph Track, most people did but I didn't want to wreck my D-Max. The bypass road alternated between rough, very rough and bloody rough!
Those who did the Telegraph Track had a ball although some came away with a fair bit of damage, water in transmission, water in fuel, suspension damage etc, pretty much all had panel damage.
Camped at Coen, Bramwell Station and Seisia. On the homeward journey Morton Telegraph Station, Weipa and Hann River. Don't miss Bramwell Station and do have their dinner and entertainment.
At tip we chose to stay at Seisia in a covered powered site, well worth the $48 a night, basically a three car carport with tiled benches and sinks.
Don't miss going to Thursday Island, have a beer and Spanish Mackerel at the Top Pub, the most northerly pub in Australia.
You are going to have a great time, lucky bugga. Highly reccomend that you cantact Katrin online and purchase the guide, from memory its only about $27. Much Much better than the Hemma guide.

PS. Fuel prices not too bad, the dearest was at Bamaga $2.04 and Bramwell Road House $1.95. The rest were around $1.60 to $1.80
