I'm looking at a Touareg tomorrow as well as a Pajero Sport. My final 2. I work at a public weighbridge and someone came across the other day and he said to me the VW is a no brainer choice.

My Son was looking at a second hand Touareg. He decided it was the vehicle for him because it had an extra crossmember and the pulling power was more than adequate for his needs. The bed length was also very good.
He checked out lots of test reports in Caravan mags and reports on it's towing capabilities.
After all that he missed out because the Yard sold it before his finance came through.
It will be interesting to see if someone comes on who has purchased one and says what it is like.

Aim at a 180kw ones they have air suspension standard and try and avoid sunroofs as they can be trouble $$

I had a tiguan from new. If the tiguan is any measure to go by, ask these questions-
Check service costs especially if it has a DSG box. Windscreen costs esp if auto wiper system. Tyre low profile if low can have a harsher ride on bumpy roads.

I am on my third Touareg and the first 2 did over 150,000km and current one is close to 75,000.
One of the best tow vehicles around mainly due to relatively long wheelbase ( very slightly longer than Land Cruiser 200) but more importantly a much shorter distance from rear axle to Towball. This ratio of wheelbase to towball overhang is why they are so stable on the road.
Our van is 236 and ATM of 3380kg and tows it easily and economy ranges from 12 to 16 l/100km depending on terrain and wind. I can nearly always predict wind direction as it is always head on irrespective of which direction I am travelling.
In relation to the DSG of a Tiguan it is not the case as pre 2012 they were a 6 speed full auto and post 2012 an 8 speed auto
As with most vehicles if you have a sunroof it ads nearly 100kg extra and this comes off your vehicle payload

As Fred k indicated they are a great tow car. My current Touareg is the v8 tdi. 800nm standard far more than a v8 land cruiser. it tows the van effortlessly , you would hardly know its behind. The air suspension is awesome. no need for weight distribution hitches at all, the car and van are always level! No such thing ad DSG on a Touareg they run ans 8speed auto. They can tow 350kg like a most utes but its the way they tow 350ks that is the difference, i have driven quite a few utes towing vans and they are downright dangerous by comparison. The only downside is that that only have 270kg ball weight, not a problem for most but there are some who need more. My rline v8 tdi has been remapped and had the diesel paticulate filters removed, it makes 312kw and almost 1000nm and returns around 14 lp100k depending on conditions ...but that is the general average, not bad for a car that is capable of 0-100 in the high 4 second bracket. Empty it averages in the high 7lp100k to 8s.
I could not recomend one more!

they certainly sound the goods power and torque wise, but the limiting aspect I see from some specs I saw was a limited GVM showing a load of about 580kg, which drops to 230kg available with a 350kg load on the towbar. That leaves a limited amount for other items including the crew.
What is the GCM of that model, or is it simply the GVM plus the rated tow allowable (3500kg)?

Stupidity towing 3500kg behind a car with 2904mm wheelbase and less than 3000kg GVM. Still researching rear axle capacity and I will elaborate when I have a bit more time.Cheers
OK,I have done as much research as I am willing to do,speaking with several VW dealers and calling the 1800 number,with little success anywhere. Nobody seemed interested in supplying the figures for the rear axle carrying capacity. The tare seems to vary from 2264kg to 2287kg,with GVM between 2840kg and 2960kg.This means the car can carry between 570kg and 670kg (+/-) .Because the towball adds 280kg and fuel is another 100kg,we have only a miserable 270kg to 370kg for everything......passengers,towbar structure,luggage,tools,beer etc.The car has a towball limit of 280kg,but that 280kg towball weight adds at least 400kg to the car's rear axle,with the extra 120kg being transferred from the front axle of the car.This means that the maximum the car can weigh is between 2720kg and 2840kg. But wait...... behind this lightweight car we now have a van with GTM (weight on wheels) of 3220kg.(3500kg ATM minus 280kg towball weight).Madness,with the van between 11% and 12% heavier than the car. This,combined with only 8% towball weight, can quickly create a "tail wagging the Dog" situation,and would be an accident looking for a place to happen.And I suspect that,like the LC200, the car would be well overloaded on the rear axle.It is my belief that,if safety is of any concern,the maximum this car can tow is 3000kg.Weights are a minefield for those who do not understand,or perhaps don't want to know.Cheers

I wish I understood what Craig1 and yobarr are saying. I just need to assume that I mustn't tow more than 2-2.5tonnes (Maximum) with my Touareg. And must make sure it weighs less than the car. Is that correct? The dealer fitted electronic brake controller with a 3 tonne aftermarket tow bar
I am going to do a towing course before I take off. I'll find one early next year

With a Touareg your ideal weight is 2800kg ATM.With the generally accepted 10% towball weight you are right on your towball limit of 280kg. This would leave GTM (weight on van wheels) of 2520kg,which is just about perfect for a van that is behind a car with weight on wheels of 2840kg.The car is thus more than 10% heavier than the van.Cheers
P.S Perhaps you could try making contact,by PM,with Greg1 who I think lives up around Mundaring? Greg seems widely experienced in weights and towing etc (as well as racing cars!)and he may be willing to help you? Good luck with getting your setup right!

Sorry frogman, I was trying not to cause a sandstorm. Diesel Particulate Filters are part of Australian design Rules and to my best knowledge they cannot be legally removed for pollution regulation issues. They catch the unburnt diesel and turn it into somewhat less of an issue to the rest of us.Also the perfect excuse for mfg to deny any warranty claim if removed. Yobarr is the resident expert on towing weights, so just tread with caution on how you set up, or be safe " with less is better".
