Hi all, My old D max is needing a new exhaust. Can anyone with a 4 cylinder diesel vouch for the 'Performance enhancing' 3 inch exhausts. If you believe the reviews, then they are definately an advantage. I'm sceptical. Convince me. DR.

My Dmax is still under warranty so no need yet but you might get more info from the rev heads on the Isuzu Facebook site
In theory, yes, a larger exhaust will or should improve performance, its not rocket science really.
I would checkout maybe DMax owners sites and speak to a "couple" of exhaust places before making your decision.
Not knowing your current exhaust size, but you may not need to go as large as 3" there are other slightly smaller sizes which maywell be more suitable.
You are on the right track all the same

My opinion is that the designers of a car have certain ideas as to optimum size for components be it tyres, batteries or exhausts. Yes - there is the economics side to consider, but the differential cost between a 2" exhaust and a 3" exhaust would be minimal. They had a reason for using a 2" or whatever exhaust and without knowing the design logic, it is hard to justify a change in design. Yes - you will get a marginal improvement in performance, but whether the increase is offset by the extra cost would be hard to tell. There may also be some downsides to going to a larger exhaust system like extra noise, lack of clearance between the exhaust and the body or the ground. No manufacturer is going to offer a product which is not at least on a par with its competitors, and if a 3" exhaust gave them the edge, you can bet that they would be in it for sure....

Well I spoke to a few who have fitted lager exhausts and I talked to Adelaide Diesel Tune who do King Brown 3 inch Stainless. . In all honesty, after all the talk, I'll fit which ever one is less expensive. Cheers.

3 and no baffle muffler on turbo engines. Doesnt really matter what brand if any ? If anything . It will spool sooner, turbine will run cooler more efficient!!

Yes it does spool earlier, but the performance difference is quite small. Mine was an RC Colorado (same as DMax) the main restriction is the down pipe from Turbo to Muffler, Turbo outlet is 63mm, down pipe internal diam is 51mm!! Rest of the system is 63mm. Having said that the 3" system is still on it at 200,000Km, has never had an issue of any sort.
