Haven't been up that way since 2013, through Armidale, Belligen, etc - I doubt the hill have improved much but a pleasant enough drive with van on back if you take your time, keeping engine and transmission cool. One place that you should definitely call into out of Uralla is Gostwyck www.visitnsw.com/destinations/country-nsw/tamworth-area/uralla/attractions/gostwyck-chapel

As Possum said, Waterfall Way is as good a run as any. Just treat the descent from Dorigo with respect, shift into a low enough gear to keep the engine revs above 3,000 RPM to assist your brakes. There are a couple of single lane sections but you can see the whole length of each, just take things slowly.
That will take you a bit over 4 driving hours. The alternative is 7 hours via Newcastle or 6 hours with a steep descent through Grafton. Ignore any other route that Google Maps throws up, they are rather interesting routes to say the least.
