How do you stop dust and water from getting into the water heater vent?

When we had a TRuma, I recessed the vent behind a false door. That protected it from dust, water, and damage from passing trees. And I did not need the supplied cover that gets lost or damaged. Now we use a diesel heater, so the problem has gone.
What brand of heater
Truma has a tight fitting (too tight) vent cover

Oldbloke.....the water comes into the cupboard that houses the heater, so inside the van. Haven't had it on a dusty road yet but that would have to come in as well

OK, now I understand. We don't do anything in relation to preventing dust or waterentering the unit. Never leaked.
More than likely the seal where it fits into the outer wall. Not the air inlet or exhaust outlet. Silicon is the usual answer.
But I guess cold be coming from somewhere else I guess.
Had a similar problem with a toilet door took a few try's to fix it.
