Two police officers were fronted by a guy with a baseball bat while questioning a youth for not wearing a mask while in covid a while ago. Dont know if they knew each other. Looks like he got out of his car with a aluminium bat, walked across the road fronted them. They drew tasers then looks like the youth tried to grab at one, a scuffle between the 4 broke out. The guy with the bat struck 1 officer and was beating him with the bat when the cop was on the ground. Other cop managed to subdue him get the bat off him, giving him a beating (good on him I say), spraying him with capsicum spray. The cop said he thought his time was up.
Forward to present time. He only got 3 years 2 months sentance. Another inadequate time period as far as I'm concerned. Dont come back with we have no place to put them. That's another failure of the system. Spend less money on the luxurious accommodation we now give them , will cost 1/2 the amount, 2 for 1 deal, build more prisons, they will be needed well into the future. All the governments are failing to keep up with the population growth within Australia on multiple infrastructure things that are needed. He could be let out in a year with time served. I'm waiting for the time when he would be given a 1 month community service order, complete a energy management program and fined $200.

The man is crazy and will not take medication - he thinks he's the king of both Norway and Australia - he needs medical treatment not locking up for twenty years.

He needs to be locked up and then medically treated. Police call for an appeal on sentence as well.

Real mental health problems (not the made up ones to try to avoid gaoltime) are a terrible thing. The system is terribly underfunded, understaffed and extremely difficult to access. This is why we see so many of these incidents. A person with mental health is also more likely to self medicate with ice, as this initially makes them feel normal.

The good thing about days gone by is that there was no *telephone book cam* back then.

I have also noticed that most govts have *closed* all the *nut houses* we used to have and now we collectively expect these patients to be * treated* within our hospital system where most employees arent full trained to deal with all the situations. This quite often results in a premature discharge back into society so that they no longer have to deal with them and this is the sad part. This procedure unfortunately includes drug abuse as well.
While I do feel sorry for these poor wretches, in many cases the * rubber room* and the *straight jacket* were a safer way to deal with them.
At the least, in this situation, medications could be administered when and if needed and staff were trained to deal with the situation and the public were not at risk.

Having had more than a few "interactions" with police it would be easy for me to treat them with disdain, but then I wonder where would society be without them? Overall they perform a vital but thankless task where rarely is any credit given, with lightweight "sentences" handed down by magistrates surely causing disillusionment in their ranks. "Why do I bother"? Slaps on the wrist do nothing but encourage recidivist behaviour. Years back a policeman was regarded as a pillar of society, respected by all, both young and old. A strong lecture and a kick in the pants generally put us back on the right track if we'd overstepped the line. In Western Australia there are huge numbers leaving the police force, which is understandable when they're under constant scrutiny by do-gooders and other social misfits who seem to know a lot more about their "rights" than they know about their "responsibilities". When I worked in a small outback town we used to frequent the only pub in town and drink copious amounts of beer before driving 70km on dirt roads back to our place of employment. The solitary local policeman was well aware that we were driving around well pizzed but each day he would visit the pub and advise where he proposed to do random breath testing that evening. He used to say that he preferred to give us prior warning because "I have to live here too. My kids have to go to the same school as yours, and my wife has to socialise with yours" but if you then got stopped, no mercy was shown. Worked well for everybody. At another small town in the bush the local cop used to drink for hours with us and then drive himself home. How things have changed. There are many more "incidents" that I could report, but perhaps not on a public forum? Cops now talk and act like robots because of voice recorders and, more recently, body cams. With this intense scrutiny, along with the actions of money-hungry but brain-dead lawyers with no apparent social conscience, is it any wonder that the no-hopers of Australia continue to do as they wish? I was simply implying that showing REMORSE in any circle of trial by a panel/jury seems to work wonders in reducing sentence length in recent times.
As for your first sentence: I never mentioned a thing about the accused persons behaviour, you did.
