We took the Gibb River road a couple of years back and it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. We were able to swim in many beautiful rockpools under or near spectacular waterfalls - it was just an incredible experience. There was lots of free camping along the way as well. We found that Jan Holland's "Priceless Campsites & Rest Areas in the North of Western Australia" was very useful in helping us to find the cheap and free spots.
The road itself wasn't too bad - just a bit corrugated - but I guess it changes every season.
We also took the side trip up to Mitchell Falls. The road to King Edward River was quite corrugated, but okay - however, things deteriorated a bit on the section from there to Mitchell Falls. We got two punctures on this journey - but it was well worth it.
You're in for a great trip - I would love to do it again!

There are many examples of Bradshaw art in the Kimberley, however the location of many are closely guarded by those who know.
I know that Mount Elizabeth Station offer excursions to see some, and that is probably the best way. Mount Elzabeth also offers camping and accomodation on the property too. I am not sure, but they probably have a web site or you can call them on 08 9191 4644.

Hi Isla
My wife and I havent travelled GRR yet, but we also plan to do it in June/July.
We will be very interested in any other responses you get.
Also, I'm led to understand that when you get to Broome at that time of the year, it is almost impossible to book into a caravan park there, so we would be very interested in getting a copy of Jan Holland's "Priceless Campsites & Rest Areas in the North of Western Australia"
I also bought Ron & Viv Moons book on GRR, and there is quite a bit of info in that.
We're towing a camper trailer and will be looking for any free or cheap campsites wherever possible.
We live in Brisbane and plan to travel through Diamantina National Park and Lawn Hill National Park (both in QLD) on the way, then on to Borroloola and on to Kununurra and GRR.
Might see you along the track.
Cheers, Davo & Linda.
