My wife and I are planning on travelling the Gibb River Road next year on our way to visit friends in Karratha. We have two small dogs we hope to take with us instead of having to leave at home for months. My question is are we able to take the dogs along the Gibb River Road as I believe it is mostly pastoral land or National Parks. Has anyone done this and what were the problems? Thanks
We spent about 6 weeks on the Gibb River Road a couple of years ago now. Although we didn't have a dog, we met several people who did take their dogs with them along that route. There are a few free spots where you can camp along the road with your dogs, and I think some of the station camping areas (which charge a fee for camping) also allow dogs. However, one couple we met had tried to set up camp at Bell Gorge (with their dog sitting quietly in the van) but the Ranger discovered their dog and moved them on. They never got to see the gorge and were quite frustrated. I don't believe that any of the national parks in the Kimberley allow dogs and it would be a real shame to take the Gibb River Road and miss out on places like Windjana Gorge (NP), Bell Gorge (NP), Tunnel Creek (NP), Mitchell Falls and King Edward River while you are there.
