Western NSW

weirdfaceMy Husband and I are planning to travel from Brisbane to Perth in a couple  of months time via Broken Hill.   We were planning to stay in Wilcannia for one night between Dubbo and Broken Hill.  Has anyone stayed there, as I have heard varied comments and I must say I am a little concerned.  Or can anyone advise of anywhere that is nice to stay between these two points.   I have heard about the Free Camping at rest areas, are these safe and can you give us any tips regarding these?

I would avoid staying in Wilcannia.
What are you travelling in, and are you in a hurry?
There might be more options near Menindee, then follow the Darling to Wilcannia.
Although it is pretty dry down there now.

The rest areas are generally safe (as are most places in this country), but most are too close to the main road for a quiet stop.
'Florida' rest stop, 50km east of Cobar, and 'Jacobs Well' rest stop, 140km east of Wilcannia, might be the best of a bad bunch along the highway.

Chers,
Peter.

Thanks Peter,
We are towing a 17ft Jayco Poptop and in a bit of a hurry, hoping to be in Esperance within about 2 weeks after leaving Brisbane.

Thanks for the advice, great to hear from experienced nomads!

Regards
Carol
