We are just beginning to plan our Big Lap, and are experienced campers, and have also towed many different trailers both single and dual axles. However we have never towed constantly that is week in week out for possibly several years. We are looking at an 18' poptop which is pretty much the max for a single axle, anyway. Any comments on manouverability, stability on the road, pros & cons etc would appreciated. Thanks
being experienced campers I think it comes down to choice. single axle gives better manourablity but will probably carry less as overall ATM compensated by the fact the van will probably be 100Kg lighter with only one axle. My deciding factor on this would be my tow vehcle. i have towed singles behind 4WD with very little bounce but the same van behind a standard family sedan the ride is terrible. Currently i have dual axle but 21ft van but would stick with dual for overall ride/tracking etc Carrying capacity probably higher to which may be needed given long term trip planned.
Hope that helps even if a bit late since your post.
Hi Daddygee We have just had the same battle - single or dual for our 12 month trip. We looked at maxing out a 17ft with single axle but ended up deciding on dual axle simply for the fact of allowing more load capacity. I know how much stuff I pack for a 2 month trip with 2 kids - cant imagine what I will need for 12 months, hubby, 2 kids and 2 dogs but at least with dual axle, I wont be as stressed with how much to bring. Have a great time Nenie
