We have the camper-trailer and 7 weeks. We plan to head to Busselton via Kununurra, Halls Ck, Broome etc. My wife is concerned about security/safety issues while on the road. Is there a forum whereby others with similar plans can flag their intentions so that we may travel in "convoy" or meet?? Are there any hints that people can provide for first=timers like us? This our first trip and is a fairly long haul for such a short time! Give us a few years and there will not be a time constraint!!
Hi Frank Wow, it sounds like a great trip but quite a lot of kms in a short time. We didn't find security to be a problem at all when we took a similar route a couple of years ago. If you're really concerned about breakdowns or having some form of communication, I'd recommend that you hire a satellite phone. Sat phones have 100% coverage of Australia (although they are quite expensive to make calls on) so you would always be able to contact someone if you were in trouble. In terms of convoys, we found that we really enjoyed having the flexibility of doing what we wanted to do when we wanted to do it instead of fitting in with others (in a convoy). We found that we met lots of people en route and sometimes travelled with another couple for a week or so and then one of us would choose to move on or go a different route, etc. It was great for everyone as we didn't feel too hemmed in by plans and deadlines, etc. Best of luck.
Frank Sounds like your in for a great time, I have a link that you might get some info from and help make the trip enjoyable , I am still learning how this Forum does links so here goes, I will add the url here just in case it don't work as expected http://www.lets-getaway.com/trucksandrvcourtesy.htm
The Explore Oz website has some great trips/tips/trek notes for WA - we are basiscally doing a similiar route in reverse, except we are going to cross the Nullabor 1st then head up the coast cross the Kimberley and then back into Qld.
We were worried about a trip that is cutting across vast area with no one around. We got the new mobile that works with mobile signal and sat hpone in the one. This put our mind at ease.

These guys really helped us, and the thing was we didnt need to use it once, but we still have it and the peace of mind you have when you know that the phone is these and that you can be called or make a call anywhere is great.
